Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2012/2013 Tiguan Headlights - Halogens in HID Projector

I know there are HEAPS of threads of people who bought their Tiguan's without HID's and seeking to retrofit/find aftermarket solutions. The questions I pose however are completely different and I don't seem to be able to find any information anywhere.

Basically I got my Tiguan without the HID's I have the stock halogen headlights without the LED's. I have no interest in installing HID's however I am chasing the LED DRL. Recently I have found this:

If you read the listing it says that you can use a halogen or HID bulb in the low beam projector. So I pose the question, is it possible to use a halogen bulb in a HID projector lens? If I can, i will be able to have my factory looking LED DRL's without dealing with the mess of an aftermarket HID installation.

Another question is, inside the cabin there is a dial that you can use to dip the headlight beam. It's next to the dimmer dial for the dashboard lighting. How does this mechanism operate and would aftermarket lights accommodate for this feature?

Subaru had halogens in a projector housing for the fog lights in the Mk2 Liberty RX.

Skoda Octavia Mk2 has Halogen in projector housings.

IMO, the light is pretty lousy. Best thing I did was fit HID bulbs & ballasts.

Would the light output be that much worse than what I have with stock halogens? I'm actually pretty happy with the lighting as it is.

I have no idea. Adequate level of lighting is a personal thing depending on how good your night vision is, where you drive & how far you like to look down the road & what colour light you like. Personally, I hate the sickly yellow colour of OEM halogens & like the grey/whitish colour of 4000k HIDs

All you can do is try it with the halogens, if you don't like the new housings with halogens then add HIDs later.

Sometimes you gotta take a punt rather than seeing what everyone else has done.

I've been watching these too but haven't been game to buy a set yet.

I'm not sure what sort of ADR approval or regulatory stamp they require to be legal. I don't want to go down the genuine HID path at the moment because it's way too expensive to do it properly.

Whatever you do I strongly recommend you check that the lights that you buy are set up for RHD.

The beam pattern is different from LHD to RHD

            RHD: \__\__
            LHD: __/__/

The consequences are that you will blind others driving on the opposite side of the road if you install LHD lights and also road signs will be harder to read. No adjustment can correct this - they have to be manufactured for RHD.

A lot of lights on ebay will be LHD only - especially lights from US based stores. Suggest searching in UK (though these tend to be a bit more expensive).

Its for when you have extra weight in the back and allows you to lower (NOT Dip) the lights so as not to blind oncoming drivers It does explain it in my manual!!!!
