  • Engine hesitation post stage 1 tune..... HELP!!

Ok guys, got some questions around an ongoing hesitation / misfire issue that is not going away with my Bluefin stage 1 tuned Tiguan...... it happens under load around anywhere between 2500rpm and 3500rpm....
I posted some time ago about a misfire issue, as it turns out after a check at VW it was found to be a misfire on cylinder 2 .... the solution in VW's mind was "we changed the coil packs around between cylinders 2 and 3 and the problem went away!"... Anyway I was not convinced and sure enough the hesitation quickly re-surfaced and began to p*ss me off again so I thought no way am I paying $100 per coil plus the additional for plugs so ECS tuning came to the rescue with Audi R8 coils and new plugs delivered for a fraction of the AU price.....
ANYWAY.....did this solve the problem????? NO!!!! So, last night I downloaded the "knock sensor" add-on to torque and I keep getting possible knock warnings around 90 km/h (when hesitation is at it's worst)......
As we know when a potential knock is sensed the ECU will adjust the timing / reduce boost accordingly to avoid engine damage..... could this be the hesitation I am feeling?? I only use 98 RON fuel too so if it's not coil packs and plugs or the ECU adjusting accordingly what else can it be??
Need some help here guys because I'm getting rather p*ssed off with it now and seriously thinking of changing brands.....

Contact Superchips UK. Tell them the issues. They will provide a revised file. Or put it back to stock tune via Bluefin and see if the issue is still there. I went through 3 tunes before I was happy with mine on my Mondeo EcoBoost. Superchips UK helped me with no issues whatsoever - don't give up just yet!!!

      ^^^ try that.

Also one other thing to try to see if it is software/hardware issue is to disconnect your MAF sensor on the air intake line. Go for a drive around the block with the sensor disconnected. Then reconnect the sensor and see how you go.

This will reset a lot of the "learned" air flow settings and go back to a "default".

If this fixes things temporarily (like a day or 2) then you have a software issue.

Either way I'd be getting onto Superchips asthey may be able to suggest some further diagnostic steps to take.

It is a common problem with certain variants of this ECU. Some tuners get around it by massaging the power delivery at these rpm's, because the lower it is down there, the less it is obvious. It's causing Viezu Aust and UK a hell of a lot of work, as we do have a few cars with the same issue, but it is a small minority thankfully. I guess you will have to wait and hope Bluefin do the same level of development work.

A proper diagnose of the engine, making sure that there aren't any underlying issues, that's what I would do. The ignition coils aren't only the part that can cause the engine to miss. Even returning to the stock and testing again doesn't prove that the tune file is defective, though I'm not saying it isn't.

            Good luck with it.

UPDATE!...... Apparently the tune I had was an old version, there have been many tweaks since I installed mine so the latest was sent to me overnight, I loaded up the Bluefin handset this morning, updated my ECU and well what can I say..... WOW!! amazing difference. Thanks guys for your input.

Good to hear you're up and running again. I have heard also that a reflash can sharpen everything up.

Is that something with engine adaptation? Can't we reset adaptation using VCDS..

Great to hear mate! Always give the manufacturer a chance to provide a solution. In this case it worked out well - glad to hear...

Good to hear you have yours resolved. As Greg mentioned, many tuners (including Viezu) have been having this issue, and I'm pleased to report that they seem to have got it sorted as well

On a technical note, I believe my hesitation problem may have been a different issue, as on mine there was a definite mechanical "fluttering" noise associated with it, which only occurred with about half throttle (not there at wot). I thought it was the turbo wastegate staying open a fraction, causing loss in boost pressure (and power), but Viezu's boffins reckon it was the vanes in the variable-geometry turbo not adjusting correctly (software issue in their tune). Given their new tune has solved the problem I presume they were right!
Whatever the case, very happy with it now

Hi Guys, Tiggy was going well for a while but in the last few weeks the same old issues have returned..... getting sick of it now!
Been doing all the usual checks as mentioned above.... even throttle resets but nope! still missing and farting around...
Hesitation through most of the rev range now, it wants to go hard but there seems to be something holding it back....
                          GRRRRRRRRR.

Engine hesitation post stage 1 tune..... HELP!!

APR have an Easter sale on at the moment... If all else fails and you believe it is tune related.

I would be putting back to stock to see if you still have an issue. If it drives fine it's most likely the tune.

A few of us have had indifferent experiences with other tuners which is why I am now running APR.

Tigger73, I have been seriously thinking of that option too...... I've had APR before on my old Jetta and it was great.... might have to go back to what I should have from day 1.
As you said mate, first thing first .... back to standard tomorrow for some checks.
