18" NY Tyres

Hey all

I probably should have asked this 4 years ago when i got the car, but the tyres that came with the 18" upgrade are extremely noisy. Even the tyre place who did my alignment noticed it. It gives a terrible whirring noise. Anyone else have this problem?

and adding to this, i never use the electronic auto park brake, and when slowing down to a standstill there is a terrible sound a split second before the car comes to a complete stop. I can almost make the brakes make this sound if i just let up a bit and brake again

I guess the noise has become worse as the last 4 years have rolled on? Most likely 'tread-blocking', a noise not uncommon with higher kilometerage tyres that haven't worn consistantly with regular rotations? Maybe?

My auto-hold makes a bad noise when i coast up a slight incline, roll back slightly, then put my foot on the brake. I really only use it to demonstrate how it works to someone that is borrowing my car for a bit...

nah its been like that all its life. not sure if its just the tyres that were put on it. I think they are bridgestones

Simple answer - the Bridgestones they put on from factory are crap. Had same issues with my Tig (also 18"NY‘s). In my case made worse by fault in one of the tyres - a hard spot that made it feel like I had something stuck to the tyre. Became so bad when I rotated tyres back to front at about 30000km that I couldn't stand it any more and replaced them (with Kumho KL51‘s). Difference is amazing - so much quieter and smoother now. Even broached it with dealer, but of course they said its nothing to do with them. Noticed that new Tigs on their lot were shod with Pirellis though!

Like a groaning sound as the pads resonate against the discs? Yes, I drive the kids nuts with this at traffic lights if you lift off the brake pedal just to the point of disengaging, esp on a downhill

At 15000km my 18" bridgestone made rather loud noisy. I rotated them front right to rear left and front left to rear right, then the noise went away.

I think what causes the noise is feathering shape of the thread blocks. A lot of tyres suffer from this if fhey dont get rotated timely and driven on highway a lot. Worst is directional one as u cant X rotate it.

The desert dueler sport is actually premium classed tyre for SUV. So, with proper maintenance and good alignment, people should not have issues. I am expecting mine to last 60,000km with the Mrs daily driving it.

It is the same with Potenza RE050A (also oem fitted to E class, Ferrari, Aston Martin) Some ppl complain about the noise. I did not.

Sometimes u have to drive a bit hard to smoothen the sharp edges (feathering effect) of the thread

I have a 2011 125TSI Tiguan with upgraded 18'' New york wheels same as yours, and the tyres are Dunlop. I think the sound is normal for European cars, same thing happened on dad's Volvo XC90 and mum's Audi A4, I guess thats the extra quality you get from European cars.

But I do have a significant tyre noise coming from left front wheel when the car is travelling faster than 110km/h, it sounds like the tyre is rubbering against prominent road markings but actually it was not. After check all tyre pressures, they were all good (34psi). I do remember there was a mechanic told me my front tyre was chopped, back to that time the car has 20000km on its odometer. But now it's 36000km, wheels has been realigned and rear tyres has been swapped with front tyres since then. So Im not sure what is coursing that noise. Has anybody else experienced the same thing?

Tyres should be rotated frequently to counteract certain wear patterns from developing. The rotation interval should be determined by the rate at which these patterns start to establish (visually or aurally), depending on the how the vehicle and the tyres interact with each other.

As the tread compound generally hardens with age, the longer you wait between rotations, the harder it is to reverse the wear formation.

It is quite possible the optimum tyre rotation interval may turn out to be less than the vehicle's service interval of 15 000 km.


On the subject of tyre inflation pressures, the figures stated on the sticker refer to tyres that are cold, i.e. at ambient temperature, not warmed up by sunlight and the vehicle not driven for at least several hours.

All gases expand when heated, which obviously affects the reading, so the pressure needs to be checked when cold.

If checking the pressure when the tyre is warm, and the figure is the same as what's stated on the placard, that indicates the tyre is underinflated.
