Tiguan side steps

Hello All
I am a newbie who has ordered a Tiguan 103TDI pacific with leather.
I am looking advice on side steps more to protect the doors from other vehicles rather than to step on. I understand that the genuine steps do not stick out far enough, anybody has suggestions on protecting doors?

If you think the standard side steps isn't going to suit I'd suggest the only option you have available is custom built.
