  • Car performance measuring devices

This is not directly relevant to Tiguans, but I know some members are using these performance monitoring boxes..

Can someone comment on accuracy and recommend relatively low cost device to measure acceleration of cars.

I am looking at Vbox(expensive) and Gtech pro.. Can some one comment on those.. Thanks

1/4 mile strip would be cheaper, accurate and legal

Or dyno runs if u prefer raw data.

I believe the Polar FIS allows 0-100 and a range of other options integrated into the MFD.

the cheapest would be a Torque Pro App (on an android phone, us$5) and a bluetooth dongle (around us$15 eBay delivered). the accuracy is probably not the best though..

That is the biggest issue i believe.
You have to get a strong GPS signal with a quick refresh rate (I have heard 5Hz bantered around) in order to get an accurate reading.
I don't know if the gps antenna with the RNS510 is even that good.

Yes ... I used that setup ( Torque pro/ dongle) and it sometimes give very confusing results.. Torque pro uses OBD2 signals from car ecu for 0 ~ 100 timing I believe but not sure...Also it does not give any result for some runs.

Gtech pro is relatively cheap not sure about the accuracy though..

I've found the RaceLogic Performance Box / Video Box / VBox products to be suitably accurate tools, though they're not cheap ($500+).

I use mine primarily for racetrack lap times where the GPS lap time is usually within 1/10th of the Natsoft recorded, transponder-based time. Not F1 accuracy but more than sufficient for my needs.

For straight line acceleration runs I've found them to be pretty accurate also - again within a few tenths of the laser recorded times over various 800m and 1000m standing sprint events.

The older Performance Box I've got is a 10Hz unit - i.e. it gets an updated GPS fix every 1/10th of a second, and uses fancy maths to calculate splits between those fixes. Their newer models now support 20Hz (i.e. 1/20th of a second) updates.

                  James,

How do you find these compare to the AutoPolar? Have you run any comparisons using the AutoPolar FIS+ for 0-100?

Be interested in any "real world" results.

I've found my 0-100 times are quite repeatable using the Autopolar but not sure how accurate they are.

I actually haven't thought to compare the AutoPolar and the Performance Box - will grab the PB out of the Polo sometime this week and give it a try.

Is there any one with Gtech pro fanatic devices. They claim to have 10 Hz GPS update rate, and available in Australia about 250 AUD.

Also sparkfun and others now have these 20Hz GPS modules..

                        https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10920

If we can get those 20Hz data logged and analyse then we will have Aussie made opensource performance meter under 200 AUD.. I can do the hardware part any one interested on developing
