I decided to go with the Bridgestone Dueler A/T 697 215/65 R16C 106/104S. These are labelled LT (Light Truck) tyres.
      $209 fitted from BJ's.
      From the sidewall info:-
Plies: Tread 2 Polyester + 2 Steel + 1 Nylon, Sidewall 2 Polyester. Made in Thailand.
I have just completed a return trip from Brisbane to Weipa, including the Bloomfield/Daintree track without any problems.
Over 1000 klm of dirt roads with 5% "bad" corrugations, and another 5% of rough dirt road.
On the rough dirt I was overtaken by a quite a few Landcruisers/Prados/Nissans with camping trailers, but I usually went past them at their petrol stops !
No new rattles or noises. Had a wheel alignment check at Charters Towers on the way back - all OK.
Very impressed with our Tiguan. Averaged 6.3 litres/100 klm over 6500 klm. After a good clean, it looks like new again.
Thanks for the feedback on the tyres. Do you get more road noise from them, compared to stock tyres?

        Hi Transporter,
Yes, some more bitumen road noise, as I expected, mainly around 70-80K, but other speeds have only a slight increase - tyres set to 38 psi.
As I still have my 4 x Hankook Dynapros and wheels, I can use them for normal roads. I am in no hurry to change them over as I am not driving the car hard or street racing !

          Hi all,
As I have completed my travels, the 4 alloy wheels complete with offroad tyres are now for sale ($600) on the VWWatercooled site and Ebay. My next trip will be into places where the Tiguan will not be suitable. I was very satisfied with the Bridgestone Dueler A/T 697's which have travelled 6500 klm. They are 215/65 R16C.

Silly question, but are there 235/50/18 worthy off road tires?
I'll be getting better grip from going to 18" wheels but would like some longevity from deeper tread, so snow and dirt capabilities for winter and exploring. Any recommendations even if not "off road"?

Hmm, 50mm profile tyre is really not suitable for off road. For off road I'd go with higher profile tyre, so you don't destroy the rims.

Yes I'm aware of that. I will be going 50 whatever the pitfalls however, it ticks all my other boxes, so my question still stands if anyone knows of what's best. Do Cooper do any deep tread 50s? I'll check it out myself and report back.
