Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tiguan VAR Design Downpipe

Finally got the VAR Design Downpipe to suit my Tig

Looks the goods, and should remove that initial restriction that bogs the beast down. Have just got it painted in matte grey, as couldn't see the point to shiny polished finish when you can't see it anyway! Can't report yet on what it's like to drive, as Simon at Viezu is having all sorts of dramas trying to get the ECU to co-operate so he can put the new tune file on it. To be expected I guess as these Tiguan ones seem to be a real PITA (as we know). Hopefully he can work it out with the techs in the UK and have it done in the next couple of days - can't wait

Hope you get back on the road quickly. Finish on the DP looks the same as my 3" system.

Given your ECU has been bench tuned once already it shouldn't be too hard.... you would have thought.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on. Are you getting the CAI done too?

          Hi mate,
me too! Yes, unfortunately it (the ECU) is being particularly cantankerous
Oh well, should be worth it - especially if they can put the Race tune on (which Simon is saying/hoping they can).
Big thanks to Simon BTW for going out of his way to get it sorted (including picking me up in the Porsche from Airport - goes bloody good too - very late last night and lending me his GTI to get around until mine's mobile). The CAI is the next item on the wish-list. Apparently they are working on one more the Carbonio style that will better fit the Tigs. Fingers & toes crossed they can get it sorted soon - his techs in the UK are working on it now

Heard that it's all going. Be interested in your thoughts and also if Simon has managed to get the race file into a Tig... May have to get mine reflashed

Still working on it - may (worst case scenario) have to send the ECU over to H.O for the Techs there to sort it! Hopefully not, but would rather wait and get it sorted (for my benefit, and everyone elses ).
Drove the GTI up the range from Cairns last night - holy s__t, what a rocket. If mine turns out anything like that I'll be one very happy chappy

Bugger. Nice to see you're taking one for the team. Hope after all this you get the Race file.

At least you have a nice drive car in the meanwhile... sounds like you'd be happy for Simon to have it a little longer

Turns out my ECU from Hell is still being unco-operative. Even the techs in the UK aren't sure if they could help as it appears to be more a connection problem on the ECU circuitboard that is not allowing it to power up when out of the car. As a last resort Greg from Carformance has kindly offered to have a go at it. His dad is a electronics expert with many years experience at IBM so if they can't sort it I doubt anyone can
On a positive note, have driven it now with DP on (albeit std tune) and am very happy. No noticeable increase in NVH when driving normally, but seems to rev more happily/smoothly and has a slightly deeper growl when you push it
Just hope we can get the tune sorted to get the full benefit.
Have to say though that even if they can't (at this stage) that Simon from Viezu and his dealers like SVS in Cairns and Carformance in Bne have gone above and beyond my (admittedly high) expectations in the amount of time and effort put in to trying to get it done - thanks guys

Have you got the part number of the ECU? Or a photo of the VW sticker on it. Save me looking, what is your build date compared to Damiens?

Hi mate, can't tell you sorry. The ECU is winging its way to Greg as we speak. Simon would probly know. Build date (of car) is Jan 2011, so we know it's one of the mongrel MED17.5 "anti-tune" (more like anti-christ) ones. The issue is not with getting tune on to it though - they successfully put Performance tune on it 18 months ago (admittedly after 3or 4 attenpts to get a successful connection so power was getting to ECU). Problem appears to be that it is a particularly difficult circuitboard to successfully get (& hold) a connection too. That's why I'm hoping/praying that Greg (& his dad's) expertise will shine through

Likely similar vintage to mine as my car is March 2011 build from memory.

It appears I've got a bung ECU, despite Simon from Viezu and Greg from Carformances best efforts (thanks guys)

Really? Have you tried APR/GIAC or Custom Code? There is a reason why some tuners pricing is higher?

                              Not tuning problem, hardware problem.
