  • Weight limit on Roof racks

Hey all, Just wondering if anyone knows what sort of weight the Standard roof racks on a 2012 Tiguan can take? I like to do a lot of camping and it would be handy to put some stuff on the roof. I was thinking of buying the Horizontal bars and putting a Basket or similar on top of them to store camping gear.

I am unsure how the Standard bars are attached but I have seen that you can buy an eBay kit that is just a stuck on and I can image that would not be able to hold much...

    Thank in advance

It should be in the owner's manual, in the specifications section. My quess it's 50-75kg.

It depends on what cross bars you get but most are about 75-80kg. There is a dealer option and from memory it is around this weight limit but it is ummm what can I say... they're a little aesthetically challenged.

You'd also have to check what the roof rails on the Tig can take if you were looking to go a higher load but probably best to put the bulky light things on the roof and heavy stuff in the boot.

Doesn't look like you have a sunroof so clearance isn't going to be an issue (can be with some cross bars). The only other thing to look at is what acessories you can get for what racks.

Thanks guys I did end up finding it in the manual and it is 100kg (racks and load) limit with the standard (North/South) bars on the roof and 75kg without. Again I have never had or used a Roof rack but It sounded a little low IMO. But then it made sence when you think about the forces on top of the load while driving..

I was looking at buying one of those lightweigh Aluminum "cages" so that we can fill it up and then cover it with a small tarp or similar.
Tigger73 you are going to get me in trouble with the misses putting ideas of accessories in my head hahaha

I've posted it in another roofrack thread, but here's a shot of my Pro-rack whispbar.

Nice, neat and tidy - perfect if you don't have a sunroof and/or want to carry a wide load. Not sure what accessories you can add on but they are (supposedly) the quietest bars on the market. Have to say I've never heard a whisper out of them.
