Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Oriental Parts - any info?

    Hi all,

Have been looking at the RCD510 Units that Oriental Parts are selling ( VW RCD510 Touchscreen Stock Radio - Oriental Parts ) to pop into the Tig.

Has anybody purchased one of these Units from Oriental Parts, and if so, can you tell me if you're happy with it? There's very little info on their product page, but I gather that it's not the version that allows Reverse Camera fitment (can't see a mustard-coloured input in the back view).

Can't establish with certainty if it's a genuine article or not - obviously it's very cheap at $299 plus shipping so I'm extremely doubtful it's genuine, but would be interested to know anyone's thoughts/experiences with them.

    Cheers,

    Roscoe

    Roscoe,

Don't know too much about oriental parts unit, but looks like a lower end unit (without Phone button or reverse camera input)

I'd suggest checking out the RCD510 in the parts for sale section http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...new-76295.html

I bought one from this seller a couple of weeks back and it was the latest Bosch unit with phone function and reverse camera input.

It was a genuine factory fitted unit which came out of a current model Amorak - swapped out for at sat nav unit prior to delivery.

Oriental parts could well be a Chinese built unit - doesn't have any VW part numbers so I'd be a little suspect.

Have a look in the audio section I have bought 2 Bosch units recently and left some advice about what to check for when buying Bosch units. The Delphi unit made in China is for VW's assembled and sold in China I have not seen these units but are supposed to be of similar quality to the Bosch unit. They do not have the RDS function and there are limitations on the BT phone connect options.

Oriental Parts is a HK online store which really only supply parts for Chinese built VDubs.

Unless you're 100% sure that the part in question is universal, then unlikely to fit or be compatible.

Most parts from Chinese VWs are compatible across other VWs. VWs in China are operated through a partnership / joint venture where VW provides the specifications and technical knowledge and the Chinese factory builds them. In most cases there's nothing too different from buying a VW part from the US instead of local, except the parts will be made in China - though using the same specifications so there shouldn't be a big difference in quality. But as Bambazonke said, with headunits they may have slightly different software functionality.

The only thing with Chinese spec Tiguans is that they have extended the wheelbase and increased rear leg room. The rear doors are stretched by about 150mm.

Not that this is going to effect the head unit of a RCD510, but if you're looking at getting any trims it's useful to keep this in mind (door trims, window trims, sills, etc).

I've been down this path and managed to get Chinese spec trims which didn't fit my vehicle - rear door trims were 150mm too long

Personally, for such an expensive and vital piece of kit I would not buy anything sold by oriental parts. You have no idea where it was manufactured, to what spec or how well made it is. If it were me, I'd go with something sourced from a VW dealer. Failing that I would have a look on ebay for a genuine used VW unit.
