  • Issue with cloth/fabric seats.

    Hi all,
My TDI Tig has just done a bit over 15000k's now and of late I have noticed that the lower area of my driving seat is already starting to fray on the edge which includes the stitching.I have a sheepskin insert on the main body of the seat but due to the side airbags dont have anything covering that part of the seat.I dont wear abrasive type clothing with large zips or studded jeans etc and I am a bit disappointed that this problem has reared it's head already. Not a good look for a supposedly quality vehicle.I considered fitting normal seat covers however that wont work to allow the locking buckles for the sheepskin insert.
Do you think I have a genuine warranty issue here? I dont even drive the vehicle every day[now retired]so it's not as though the seats are getting a flogging.
Any thoughts on this matter fellas?
    Phil

Take it back to the dealer and get it repaired?
2 years of ownership is too short for this to happen imho.

Mine hasn't shown any signs yet.

Agree with team_v - take it back to the dealer. They'll probably try and fob you off as "normal wear and tear" or not covered under warranty but I'd stick to my guns if you're certain there's nothing you have done that has caused excessive wear.

Can you maybe post a picture???

I've done 25,000 km and no major signs of wear (as you would expect).

It's going to be a major hassle if/when you go to sell the car as I don't think the repair will be cheap (hence reason to get it sorted now under warranty).

I bought the ilana (sp?) seat covers assuming that I would have this issue as well.. assumption being it would start to appear after roughly 4 years or so, not 2. Def a warranty thing imo

          Hi fellas
          Thanks for the response.
Yeh I think i will have to take it back to the dealer[unfortunately not on the list of my favourite people] and yes I do expect all the usual
          "normal wear and tear" responses.
In response to team v I have only had the Tig for a lot less than two years.I purchased it new[although a 2010 plated vehicle] in March 2011,so no I dont think it good enough that the seat is already showing signs of wear.
I know it's not the seat belt rubbing on the seat when I am in and belted up as when I double checked yesterday the belt actually doesnt touch the cloth part of the seat rather it sits on the lower plastic surround on the seat base.
I know it's only going to be a matter of time before the stitching does wear thru.Going to have to try and think of another way to protect that area of the seat.Maybe it's just the way I enter/exit the vehicle.[I dont have very long legs]
          Thanks again
          Phil

            Hello DR.
Yes I also went that way with the Ilana seat covers yesterday but when I was stretching the cover down over the side airbag part the stitching on the seat cover just burst open.So now I am going to have to return them for a refund and try and find a make of seat cover that not only is airbag complian but also is in two parts i.e. separate pieces for seat back and squab.Dont know how I will go there?
I mite have to get a custom sheepskin set made up that is also airbag safe.More bucks to spend!!

I have similar issue... the only difference is mine is 132 TSI 2012 May and i have only had 3500kms on the clock.
There is already a hole on the side of the front passager seat. right next to the seatbelt buckle. I plan to bring back to the dealer for a replacement of the fabric or even the whole car seat. It has been a headaching car since i purchased this brand new good looking SUV but with all the problems i have so far - rattling, creaking noise on pillar B when turning, car seat fabric hole, noise from the dashboard and high petrol consumptions........
I bought it because of the good reputation of VW however it does really let me down.

The creaking noise can be sorted with a bit of silicon spray on the door seals. My Tig's 4.5 years old and I have to respray mine every year. It's just the fact that seals are doing their job that makes the creaking noise, not a quality issue at all.

                  Cheers
