Is bench tuning a must now for 2012 2.0TSI Tiguan? - APR Stage 1 Tuning

Good 'day ....

am sourcing out shops in Perth, WA who can do a re-map of my 132 Pacific ... so far, the APR dealer in Perth has indicated APR does not have yet in their "system" the ECU details of my Tiguan (manufactured April 2012) thus will need to uplink my ECU details to the main computer of APR in Alabama?, USA.
After which, APR (USA) will "create" the program that'll be used to re-map my ECU.
All of this will entail my bringing in the Tiguan into the shop for a day and then within a week's time, bring back the Tiguan for the final re-mapping.
Is this a normal process for APR and similar reputable tuning mobs now?
Am not too keen in having the removing and fitting of my ECU more than once. Chances of the ECU getting damaged will be greater IMHO.

I had my APR tune done in mona vale a month ago it was bench tune but all done in 2 hour.
Love it and no issues my tiguan is a 2012 model as well.

Lots of mid 2009 up ECUs have to be bench flashed. I wouldn't be surprised if your brand new current model has an ECU that hasn't been seen before. All flashes have to be created from an original of the correct softcoding. the new tuned file could be used in multiple vehicles after that.

I seriously doubt it would take them all week to re-write it. I get files in a couple of hours, 15 minutes is the current record. It depends on the time difference between Perth and Alabama.

I assume it's a busy workshop, so allocating time the following day would be pointless unless they have the file back.

There's no particular risk in opening the ECU a second time.

Depends if Alientech have the communication protocol Miro, the new models take all companies a bit of time. Wait till your tuner of choice has the ability to "talk" to your ecu, then they should be able to do it same day, usually in the evening when the parent company overseas is awake.

Love it and no issues my tiguan is a 2012 model as well.

It seems mona vale guys have done lots of Tiguan recently, they did mine in less than 60 minutes last week.

Just so you know, my 2012 132 pacific (got tuned in Mona Vale also, one week turn around), is returning about 12L/100 on stage one compared to 10.5L/100 on the standard program.

As much as I loved the extra power above 2.5k rpm, I've decided the ride was smoother and more fuel efficient on standard. No regrets getting it though!

Yes, and this is after 4000km so I'm pretty sure it's adjusted

Weird.
I drove mine out to our local short circuit on the weekend.

Best i saw on the way outwas 5.9L/100km on the MFD, but when i arrived it was 7.4.
After a 30 minute session out there it was showing 15l/100km.

Some of the chips these days have a link removed on the board so that they can't be written (pull-up resistor on write enable pin). If that is the case, there is no option other than to remove the ECU board and solder the link back on before you can program it. I beleive this is the case with a lot of the newer Tiguans and the reason why you can never program via the OBD port without first pulling the ECU out and resoldering the link back on.

Depending what your tuner does they may remove the link or leave it on. If the link is left on you may be able to program over the OBD port afterwards and hence not require to pull the ECU out a second time.

Having said that flashing the ECU on the bench may actually be safer than flashing in the car as there are no other devices to talk to the ECU in the middle of programming. The last thing you want is a door being opened to cause an interrupt in the middle of writing to the ECU as this has the potential to corrupt what is being written.

Obviously there are issues with handling the electronics as you don't want any static discharges stuffing things up either, but as long as the right precautions are taken you should be OK.

One week sounds like a long time, but probably they're being on the safe side to make sure the file is back ready for download.
