  • 132TSI Automatic vs DSG

    132TSI with 6-speed automatic vs 155TSI with 7-speed DSG...

What is the difference (besides the obvious)?

Is automatic same as DSG or it's inferior system?

The 6 speed is the old slushbox style and the 7 speed is the DSG.

      My own take:

DSGs are really just a manual gearbox with 2 differences: one the computer controls the clutch and two, there are two clutch units, one for even and one for odd gears.

Regular automatics use a torque converter to switch between gears.

I'd say automatics are smoother, especially in the lower gears but it seems to sap a lot of power as well. So the car feels a bit more lethargic at low revs.

DSGs tend to be a tad rougher in lower gears. It is after all a clutch assembly. But the gear changes are very very quick (because the other is already pre-engaged) and like manuals, it's usually more fuel efficient than automatics.

I have a 132 with 6sp auto, and comparing that to the 7 speed it's about 1.2 secs slower to get to 100kmph (7.7s for the auto, about 6.5 for the DSG both with stage 1), but supposedly it's more reliable than the DSG.

So, what would you buy: current 132TSI with auto transmission and extras or wait for 132TSI with DSG (and I guess without added features like Park Assist and Front Fog Light)? Does DSG really worth the wait in this situation?

I thought they are no longer making the 132 in DSG due to parts shortage?

We have both in diesel and as for the long term reliability and peace of mind, my wife and I chose A/T and my younger daughter opted for the DSG, since the diesel was what she wanted. Shame really that they don't do Pacific with the diesel.
Now; driving it; the DSG feels/is faster, gives better fuel economy especially in the city, even with the auto start switched off 100% of the time. The DSG Tig is quieter inside and outside, though it could be just the age difference (1.5 year apart).

if you want to keep your Tig for many years after the warranty expires, the A/T could be a safer option.

The DSG is a superior transmission, it changes gear sooner, so the car is quieter and more responsive, and returns better fuel economy (0.5 to 1.0l/100km). But the DSG is prone to failure ($5-7,000 repair bill) and the automatic is a Japanese bullet proof unit. If you're keeping it more than three years, the automatic looks a little better

It's like comparing Modern Talking with Blue System.

                  Which one's worse Dieter?

Hahaha! Were you expecting my music knowledge to be limited to say Slim Dusty or Troy Cassar-Daley?

How horribly wrong you would be to have stereotyped!

Anyhow, did go through a Euro Disco (and in particular German) phase in my early years.

Something I probably should not admit to.

But I hope that's not your real name?

I would have emancipated from my parents years ago (if I were you).

For those who don't know, it would be equivalent to say being called Iva Davies and living with that for the rest of life.

                          Tiguan 132TSI with DSG?

                          G'day all,

I'm starting to seriously think about buying a Tiguan and was leaning towards the 132TSI Pacific until I noticed it didn't come with DSG. I understand the 6 speed auto is a temporary measure as there aren't enough DSG gearboxes around. Can't really justify the extra expense for the 155 (as fun as it would be!)

Will the 132TSI eventually come with the DSG? There is no indication on the volkswagen website. Anyone spoken to dealers about this?

                          Cheers,
                          ftd

I thought you could custom order it with DSG but it wont have the freebies of the Pacific

I bought the 132 with DSG in January of this year, so they do exist. It is a great gearbox and with the APR Stage 1 the whole Tiguan driving experience is a hoot.

                              Cheers
