Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Which upgrade should I do first

My new tig is 1 week old, and like everyone else here am really liking it. I have the pacific model and am wanting to add either the rns510 or the apr stage 1 tune in the next few weeks. I'll eventually do both within the next year (wish I could afford both now!), but just wondering what people think about which order I should do it in. Do I go for the better ride first or the nav and more interactive display? Currently have only done 300km's so wasn't sure if better to put the tune off for a bit.

It sounds like a nice package you have there. I would put at least 1500km on it first.
    Performance Tunes from $850

The APR Stage 1 tune is the best money I have spent on a car in more than 36 years of owning approximately 25 different cars. It is the best bang for your buck return I have ever encountered. 57kw for 1275 (I got the Easter Special price). Amazing. I did wait until mine had more than 10,000ks on it, just because I am an old fuddy duddy I suppose. Really, there is no reason not to get it done right at the start of ownership, after all, the Engine in the R comes that way brand new and they are the same item

How does the Tig react to a remap? I have the 2.0TDi 140DSG and seriously considering a remap but not if it will cause any issues for the engine or damage the DPF. The latest Tigs also have the tri-core ECU's which need physical removal from the car for flashing, and this can be accidentally wiped off by the dealer during a service I hear.

Do Stage one first and then audio.

I did Stage 1 at 1500 km. Would have done it day 1 but went on holiday up the coast instead!
Am halfway through audio update now. Head unit changed, speakers in 10 days.

You'll love both upgrades ......... but APR more!

The power up to 130kW and up to 380NM torque. Both are approx. only.

thanks, thats some pretty good feedback! It does seem like pretty good value to get so much more out of the engine (Really get out of it what is was designed to do). I know some people have mentioned they have seen fuel economy improve also, would you say you have noticed this at all? Also are you aware if APR offer these special prices at other times of the year, or is it just an Easter thing. Thanks in advance!

I reckon the fuel economy is much the same as it was before the tune. I give it a squirt every now and then, but then again, I used to do that anyway, it is just far more enjoyable these days.

I think the specials come out a couple of times each year, Christmas and Eater at a guess. Just keep an eye on their website I reckon.

'Pretty good value' indeed. I recall as a young bloke saving up around $1000 in the 70's to have a Ford V8 motor 'ported and polished'. That gave me a supposed extra 12 horse power. I think I noticed it. The Holly carburettor was a further $500 and I did notice the difference with that, BUT, this simply does not compare to the APR upgrade for the Tiggy and in comparative price terms, it is as cheap as chips. Win, win all round

Bringing an old tread back to life but wanting to know what people's Opinions on the Tune in relation to the New Car Warrenty. I just purchased a New Tuguan and would like to get the upgrade myself one day but worried that it might void the new car warrenty. Anyone know if this tune would do that?

And as for the OP I Personlly believe the engine should be run in before you are looking at putting more strain on it. I know they are strong engines and can take a bit but I like the idea of running it in first. Also why not enjoy it while it is new then a few months down the track get it flashed and it will be liek having a new car again. Twice the enjoyment.

                      Thats my 2 cents worth.

Yes more than likely the tune will void your engine warranty and possible drivetrain also. It's the risk you take. Suggest getting a service, getting the engine/drivetrain fully checked over and any warranty items sorted before putting a tune on.

Yes and that's why Transporter recommended doing at least 1,500km of easy driving before putting a tune on. A tune will generally run the engine harder anyway which is something that isn't recommended in the first 1,000-1,500km.

And if you're taking the warranty in your own hands I'd suggest getting the engine warm before doing any hard accelleration (run for 5 minutes or until temps are up) and getting regular servicing is an absolute must.

After having a taslk to my local provider of the APR Tuning he gave me a link, which i was unable to find myself which has some interesting things in regards to the warrenty. It is not a solid answer but is helpful.

Thought I would share the link to APR Support (many have probably already seen it though) APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles.

This is my first brand new car and never had a warrenty before this car and seems it just in place to ruin everyones fun haha. At the end of the day they would be liek an Insurance company, use anything to get out of fixing the problem at their cost...

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a lot of black and white when you're talking about modified vehicles - things start to get grey. It can then come down to who has deeper pockets for lawyers which nobody ends up winning - except for the lawyers of course.

Yep it's called the fun police.

Suggest you also consider Viezu/HPX HPX@viezuaustralia.com.au. HPX are Viezu dealer in your area and also manufacture some awesome exhaust systems for some of the top Aussie performance brands (HSV, FPV, Walkinshaw, etc). We're very lucky that they are now making a specific Tig exhaust system which is available through Viezu dealers.

Anyway if you want to take you Tig past just a tune, the next biggest performance gain is from an exhaust (standard Tig DP is a real bottle-neck). APR used to sell a Tiguan downpipe, but it was very expensive and they only sold a few before stopping production. There's a couple of guys on the forum that were lucky enough to get one (they're a collectors item now) so now we're fortunate that another manufacturer has stepped up to the plate to provide us Tig owners some hard to get go-fast bits.

You can mix and match tunes/exhaust from different tuners but you'll find most will offer incentives to stay "in-house". I know (from personal experience) the Viezu performance package is great and pricing is even better. Speak to Simon at Viezu Australia about their Hot Tuner specials as they're doing some really great deals at the moment.

I would love to continue modifying it until there was nothing left to do but I think the tune and a couple electronical mods will be the only thing I will be doing to this car. The misses has said nothing on this car... But I think I can justify the tuning but telling her it safer without all that Turbo lag and could save on fuel in the long run (even if that is not the case)
