  • Daytime running lights

    Hi all.
Have MY11 Tig with halogen (not HID) lights, and am wondering if there is a coversion that anyone has found for the fog-lights to be used as DRL's in conjuction with front park ("side") lights? If so, is this legal as I have personally been pulled over by coppers for aftermarket LED DRL's I had on previous car (thought they were the foglights so was going to book me). Can anyone point me in the right direction for the VAGCOM procedure to re-program these (and side-lights) as DRL's also? I'm sure I've seen it somewhere (on Ross-tech or a link to a Forum), but have been searching everywhere and can't find it again
    Cheers

Hi there check this link out it contains most of you what you asked...

How to disable or use the fog lights as Daytime Running Lights DRL on VW Jetta

Unfortunately though, if you use the fogs during the day, technically you'll still fall foul of the law unless you change the bulbs over to LED equivalents which I've seen on the internet and on other cars. But then you use your foglights as these cannot be used in the fog.

It's in here (as with other tweaks):

      http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...ons-57346.html.

Should've Google searched using "VCDS and Tiguan" combo.

Yep changing the bulb to non-fog type helps.

Certainly haven't had any issues with mine to date.

See my signature below for pic of my LED DRL fogs.

Ok so if I get this right you've changed over your standard halogen fogs to LED DRL equivalents and effectively lost the conventional foglights? I'm actually interested in this mod as a viable alternative to finding a good location for separate LED DRL after-market modules but don't want to compromise on visibility in thick fog. Have you driven in dense fog yet and found the LED fogs inadequate?

            Hi Naresh,
so, typing this all again because had to refresh and login again (frickin' F.R.E.D's). Dead right, that is my intention once I find LED fogs similar colour to the park/side light globes I've already replaced. Have driven in fog and experimented with just low beams (with OSRAM 65W offroad globes), just fogs, and both together and there is no appreciable difference IMO. Might be different with HID's or higher Kelvin (white or blue appearance) globes in conventional headlamps though, as they won't penetrate as well as the lower Kelvin (yellower) globes. Will let you know how it goes. I assume Aussietig has been through all this so would probably have some (as always) well-informed opinions.
            Cheers

No sorry ... I live in the urban jungle. So fogs are pretty much useless to me anyway (like most options I've ticked, in hindsight).

So I've been happy to lose all conventional fogs for DRL functionality. So Beckham over Rooney I suppose!

I've also coded mine to light up (at night) on one side (like non-blinking indicators) when cornering or indicating.

              LED bulbs are definitely inadequate.

Kelvins do jack. It's more the lumens (output) that fails you with LEDs.

Just as a heads up ... putting LED bulbs in the fog will trigger a bulb out (yellow light) warning on your MFD.

Couldn't be bothered trying to fix this, since most people haven't even got a solution for the Tig the rear licence plates.

So be prepared to live with that if you want to proceed.

Hi aussie I think I made the mistake in thinking you did in fact have LED foglight units as seen on many other new cars these days. I have seem some Skoda and Mercedes at least. From looking at your images I can see you have blue tinted halogen bulbs in the fogs - am I right?

As for coding the fogs to act as cornering lights I noticed you already have the bi-xenon headlamps so do you have have the option of using the static cornering light within the headlamp to do that job? That's how mine are programmed after I had them retrofitted, together with Autolevel and AFS.

With regards to rear number plate LED's I'm not sure how the Tigs in other countries differ but I was able to disable the number plate monitoring system so can now fit whichever LED bulb I like without fear of triggering an error on the MFD. I'm sure you would have known about that anyway but thought I would mention it just incase.

Sorry Naresh, my pic is an old one!

You're right ... those blue tinted bulbs are actually PIAA 7500K which I am unable to source anymore after one side blew out.
In terms of colour, they actually match the 6000K LED bulbs that I have in the parkers.

Anyhow, have moved onto 9006 LED bulbs now (just for looks).

Yes ... in addition to the cornering lights within the headlamp, I had also coded the fogs that way as well.

                    See old picture below:

Bit 1 (concealed in pic) needs to be checked to activate fogs as DRL.
Bit 7 to enable them as cornering lights.

But this probably explains why one of the PIAA bulbs did blow. But I've had them for over 5 years now.

Interested in your coding for number plate. Have you actually turned off all monitoring entirely (i.e. Bit 5 below) or just the number plate?

Originally I turned off the cold lamp monitoring on licence plate (i.e. Bit 6 below) and it seemed to have worked.

But the bulb out warning has since come back and have tried everything, but to no avail.

Hi that's interesting that the number plate warning came back. I have simply ticked Bit 6 above and not had any bulb warning on the MFD, as have a few other members of the mytiguan forum. I didn't notice the Bit 5 on my VCDS but my existing front LED sidelights are working fine without causing any warnings.

Have you got load resistors connected to your 9006 LED fogs?

No ... use to the warning on my MFD for licence plate anyway. So don't want to spend the money especially if there's no guarantee of success.

I say that because most people that sell error-free LED bulbs have not been able to resolve this problem on the Tig.

Trust me ... I've enquired with a few already and they can't explain it either (since their bulbs definitely work on say a Golf).

In terms of your sidelight not throwing up a fault ... either it's not monitored or monitoring not as sensitive.

Certainly, all error free LED bulbs work for the front parkers & interior. Have not had any problems or a need to manage them with coding.

But fogs & rear licence plate seem to be a PITA on the Tig and can't be overriden based on my experience to date.

Hi mate. Yes, lumens more accurate measure of brightness but very few LED bulb manufacturers seem to use that (wonder why)
Given that LED's arereally more just for looks, I guess that's why they use Kelvin (temp/colour output) - although they call the higher temp ones (white/blue) the cooler colours. Go figure. All I know is that the yellows/reds travel further in low vis conditions (something to do with wavelength if I remember my high school physics correctly). But as DRL's defintely more noticeable, and look good too
As to error warning in dash - if you have been unable to get rid of it I doubt very much the dealer can (going to try and get them to disable it when getting service done). Have a plan B in the form of Torque program on my Android phone which has automatic error cancelling function. Will let you know if it works.
                          Cheers

For those interested, finally found a solution on eBay for the bulb out warning on my LED fogs.

Here's the LED bulb that I've got on the fogs:

Now here's the new lead that's gotten rid of the problem:

                              Hi Aussietig,
as I've said before - you the man
I've gotten some very similar looking LED's (from Mylitco - UK) but where did you get the resistor/plug arrangement? Am taking the Tig to the dealer for first service and couple of little warranty fixes tomorrow, and am going to ask them if they can reprogram the Park & Fog lights as DRL and disable the bulb-out warnings through VAGCOM, but may have to look at getting that doo-hickey if they are unwilling/unable to do so.
                              Cheers
