Good points Umai Naa!!. In light of what's been said following my previous post, $900 to rectify the problem may well be the best outcome.

Bad Diesel

My mate filled his diesel with petrol in March, youd think that after owning a diesel for 10 years he'd know better lol, but hes one of those guys..
In the end, he got a quote to fix it, it came back at 1800 because the petrol had gone right through the entire fuel system.. it was ugly.
He claimed it on his insurance & only paid the 500 excess. His insurance said it was a common thing, people make mistakes driving & crash, people make mistakes when filling their tanks, so it was all good.
The result is for $500, he got a new fuel pump, full injector & rail cleaning & other related stuff. The only downside to it was he didnt have a car for almost 2 weeks & that hes still the same dope he was prior to putting petrol in it

Ok, here is the latest. I contacted my insurance company and they have gone out to inspect the car but have heard nothing back about it yet. I'm hoping that i will not have to pay a thing as our reciept from the fuel def says diesel. I will let you all now what the final outcome will be when i know more.
Thanks for the comments!

I would've gone straight to Caltex for a claim, and only get the insurance company involved if they didn't play ball.
So I hope that the insurance company does not charge you an excess, since Caltex are the party at fault. In which case, they'd send the repair bill to them.
However, if the insurance company is paying for the repairs out of their own pocket, then I would expect to pay an excess - assuming your insurance policy covers mechanical damage, that is.
EDIT... that is to say, mechanical damage not arising from a collision, flood, fire, theft, malicious act, etc.
But obviously, this will depend on your insurance policy.Last edited by Diesel_vert; 28-06-2012, 06:55 PM.

Well the good news is its friday!!!!! Even better news is i get to go for a drive in the Tig this weekend. After getting the insurance company involved they went over to VW service centre and now I have been called up by VW service centre telling me "after much deliberation we have finally found the problem. I t was a fuel pump that was not working properly and your car is covered by the manufacturers warranty"
Cough cough!!!
I'm just glad its fixed and don't have to pay a cent. In the end the caltex vortex was not a bad batch of diesel.
Case closed!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all your comments and help. This forum Rocks
See you on the road!!!!

Good that the pump didn't shred itself when it died, though.Resident grumpy old fart

Though I wonder, how many other people have been fobbed off by claims of "poor fuel".

That's certainly a good outcome, just hope that you have no more fuel related troubles, when you get your car back.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

Thought I'd post my experience with 'bad diesel'.
Early last year our 2009 T5 Caravelle started playing up intermittently and the engine just stopped while doing 110km/h on the highway.
Diagnosis was sludge in the tank...who knows where and when it was picked up though.
Ended up costing $400 to drain and clean the tank, flush the fuel system and replace the fuel filter.
I now use a 'Mr. Funnel' filter when I fuel up.
I have another problem now that I was hoping for some advice on...
The car is running fine, but I get ~300km on an empty tank!
When the fuel gauge and distance to empty show zero, it will only take 50L to fill, so it is out by at least 30L.
I'm taking it in to have it diagnosed and repaired, but was hoping for a heads up as to what the cause might be, as I like to be informed before speaking to a service agent.
