  • Exchange 18" Wheels for 17" - any takers?

    Hi all,
call me crazy, but am seriously considering exchanging the 18" New York Alloys with 235/50R18 Tyres that came on my Tig for 17" Bostons (preferably with Kumho Tyres) and was looking for expressions of interest. Mine has just on 11000km on it and wheels are all good (no chips, dings or srapes). Depending on mileage, condition and tyres would be looking at swop + $, or about $1200 + shipping for outright sale - would then get 17" Euro Wheel & Tyre package off Tempe Tyres.
Couple of reasons - primarily ride comfort (more sidewall flex for soaking up bumps). Probably won't make a huge difference, but any improvement would be good. Secondly, never been real keen on the New Yorks. Came on the car (floor-stock run-out sale), but a bit too busy for my taste (and can be a bitch to clean).

PM me if you are interested or want more info/photos.

    Cheers

    Was originally looking at these,

but then spotted these - a bit different but not too over the top?!

Any techno whizzes out there feel free to cut & paste onto my Tig so can see what they'll look like on

You sure the first ones aren't just as busy?

Definitely prefer the second Audi reps, if I was you.

That's the current RS3 rims and is similar to Bostons in terms of look.

But more importantly would be easier to clean.

However, not sure about the gunmetal finish on a silver Tig.

FWIW, I reckon the RS6 rims would be more suitable:

Anyhow all useless chatter, if you can't get rid of your New Yorks!

So good luck with the trade or sale.

      Hi mate,
yes, all true and those RS6's are some nice looking wheels, but I think I would still prefer the Bostons if (as you say) I can find someone keen on trade

Discovered part of the problem with my still choppy ride - appears the suspension mob that fitted springs must have pumped the tyres back up to 36PSI when doing alignments! Let them back down to recommended 32PSI this morning and ride noticeably improved. Might still considering swopping 18" New Yorks for 17" Bostons though if anyone interested.
        Cheers

How do these photoshopped versions look?

Why don't you just put the original springs back in?

Tiggomatic, this site doesn't actually allow you to upload pics to it - all you can do is put an embedded link of a pic hosted on another site.

Hi mate, thanks for trying - am very familiar with the "technical issues" as I have lots of them myself
Only just worked out how to put photos on (thanks to Gecko2k). I think what you have to do is download the photos onto a hosting site (I have mine on Photobucket), then you copy direct link for photo on there, THEN you click on "Insert Picture" widget on message toolbar and paste the link - simple huh (not!)
Howzabout I pm you my email and you can attach to that

From one "grumpy old fart" to another - if that would correct the problem I would - duh
Not the spring travel, more the rate - Eibach progressive rate springs have improved the "low impact/small bump" ride whilst giving better handling and lower CofG (the desired effect), but am trying to insulate the car more from small bumps and ripples that are rife on our roads (lucky to have 1km which is the same road surface - patches on patches). I know I'll never get rid of it altogether, just trying to tone it down as much as possible

I think I'll stick with the Bostons though - simple, elegant & original so no dramas down the track. ECS is selling complete OE wheel&tyre packages (including TPMS sensors) - if only freight wasn't so expensive

The rate is what concerns me - the "soft" portion of the springs are probably close to being coil bound with just the vehicle weight (else the vehicle would take a big "set" on corner entry) so you would only get the softer ride for quite small bumps and then you are in the stiffer portion of the springs where you are also underdamped, giving a jouncy ride.

Smaller wheels with taller sidewalls aren't a bad option, though - not many here would take that step.

Could be, but initial impression is that the Eibachs give better bump absorption (on smaller stuff anyway) - could be in trouble if I go offroad and hit any bigger bumps though
Hoping the higher tyres would give more cushioning though. Guess I'm pushing s*&t uphill a bit, but coilovers might be only true solution (sigh)

The taller tyres will definitely help - I downsized an inch for my daily tyres after fitting a B12 kit to return some cushioning.

A good set of dampers would go well with those springs - you don't have to go the coilover route for better damping.

Yes, am regretting now not going the extra expense and getting shocks as well - was considering Koni FSD, but a few people on reviews and Ian at Rennenhaus have said that they had trouble with them failing. Koni Yellows (sports adjustable) might be a better bet though. If I flog it enough I might be able to wear out original shocks quick enough to justify getting them
I guess you're right about coilovers - not going racing and probably not savvy enough to set them up right anyway
