  • Insurance for Tiguan

    Hi everyone,
I wish I was able to say I was driving in my Tiguan but alas the thing still has not got to the dealers yard. Got to Pt Kembla on 15 May but not quite sure where it is now.

Whilst waiting for the car I thought, I might get an insurance quote and get some of the admin stuff out of the way? I went to the usual suspects (NRMA, AAMI) but both will only insure the vehicle for a max value of $53000.

My specs are 155 TS + sunroof + leather + BiXenons + SatNav + RVC and ParkAssisst + ACC + Alarm. Unless I have been ripped off by the dealer, the on road cost for such vehicle is close to $60 K.

What have other people's experience been? is there something I am doing wrong or have I paid too much for my Tig?

    Would appreciate some pointers.

    Cheers

    Bman

I would try all alternatives (allianz, suncorp, credit union australia, youi)
I was with RACQ but changed to Youi as they covered me with the upgrades.

I've got my Tig insured for $53,500 with NRMA. Did you do it online or over the phone. I did mine over the net and it went higher then that.

I got the initial quote online, and then spoke to NRMA via phone. they told me they go by the pricing in the Glasses Guide. I apparently have to speak with their underwriters if I want the vehicle insured for anything higher than $53K. I think they have got the wrong model in there guide / framework.

thanks for the quick response though guys.

Hi Bman. I have a 132 Pacific and insured with NRMA. Rather than set a value, they suggested for the first two years I insure it for Market Value and if the car is a total loss n the first two years they simply replace it.

After the first two years you will need to agree on a value.

Hope this makes sense and is of assistance.

As Mullos said, most decent comprehensive policies do new car replacement for first 2 years and then it's market or agreed after that.

But yes, the sliders maxed out at something like 53-54K, less than what the retail price I paid was. I went with the max value for added peace of mind, but shouldn't be an issue for 2 years.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I got the same story regarding the new for old replacement in the first 2 years. I tried explaining to the guys that should they have to replace the vehicle it would cost them more than the 53K that they are insuring the vehicle for. But they reckon they will replace the vehicle with all the options listed on the original invoice if the vehicle is not recoverable.

It's funny how the insurance industry works.

But thanks again everyone. Now back to waiting and chasing the dealer to find my Tiguan

                BMan,

I'm with NRMA and have been for sometime. I rang 3 times to get my car's agreed value to be changed! I spent just under $60K and the market value that NRMA had on file for a Tiguan 2012 TDI was to the value of $43K. I was simply not happy with that. On the third call, I spoke to a Team lead who asked a suite of questions and eventually they agreed to change the value to just under $60K. Obviously my monthly repayments went up, but if they advertise on TV that they're going to cover things that aren't automatically covered by other insurance companies, then I would expect that they insure me for the price I purchased the car prior to it leaving the show room floor!

Good luck on the waiting I waited 6 months for mine

Thank for that input MisterE. I will keep at NrMA and hopefully they will come to the party. I did notice that you had recently taken delivery of your Tig. My car is in Australia, docked about two weeks ago in Sydney but just hasn't got to the dealer yet.....the wait is killing me.

Just speak to an NRMA team lead. Advise them of the cost of the car and that you wish to amend your agreed insurance value. obviously they'll ask if it's on finance etc and what the car will be primarily used for.

Yes, the wait does kill you, especially if you've been informed that it's docked and discharged from the docks to be "Compliance Plated". it usually takes about 2 weeks for Compliance Plating (that's what my sales exec told me here in NSW), so I anticipate that you should be getting your car end of this week or early next week. Just follow the sticky on what to check when picking up your car and you'll be sleeping in your Tiggy and hugging it like they do in the VW ads

Just as a matter of interest Bman, which dealer are you working with?

Hi Mullos, I'm with Chatswood Classic. Yet to get a final delivery date but I'm told it is sometime next week. The car seems to be at VW Central at Whetherill Park.

                          Insurance by VW Finance

In relation to my initial question I spoke with my dealer to seek advice and they did a bit of research for me getting me quotes from all over the place. They also suggested going with the 2 year New replacement should the vehicle be unrecoverable - the deals put forward by the big firms like NRMA.

However of particular interest to me was the fact that VW themselves actually offer insurance through VW finance and Allianz. Its a very competitive deal....for the full purchase price of the vehicle, choice of repairers, guaranteed genuine parts and also a three year new replacement should the vehicle be unrecoverable for any reason.

I am very tempted to take up the VW offer and say adios to my loyalty with NRMA.

I walking into my local NRMA office 2 weeks ago, showed them the contract for sale from the dealer.
It took the lady about 30 sec to overwrite the top value that the system stated.
All she had to do was put a entry in the system that the vehicle is been insured for purchase price $57K
Was a lot simpler then all of the ones I tried over the phone or online and the price was very good

Good luck mate - mine was about 10 days from arrival to delivery. Although I was seriously pushing them following some issues prior to this.

                              It's worth the wait though.

                              Enjoy.
