Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Rattle - Trailing Throttle.

    Hi All,
I've noticed an annoying rattle (aren't they all!) which appears to be coming from the vicinity of the driver's footwell in my 1yr old 125TSi. It sounds like a robust metallic rattle, which only happens on trailing throttle, and seems to be at any speed, on any surface, and does not seem to be linked to engine load at the time when throttle is removed. For a while, I thought it was the accelerator pedal itself, but it is almost impossibe to apply even slight pressure to the pedal without the engine responding and thereby removing the "trailing throttle" condition". Now it is possible that the noise is coming from the engine bay, but I'm reasonably confident that it's in the cabin. It generally lasts just long enough to begin to get a fix - and the disappears. It's slowly driving me nuts!
Only a couple of thousand ks to the next service, and I'm sure I'll invite my friendly VW tech for a drive - the problem is easily to demonstrate, but hard to pinpoint. Any ideas?

    thanks & regards,
    John

    Check out the Mk6 Section.
There is a wastegate clip that dealerships have been fitting to the 2.0TSI engines to stop the rattle.

I've got the same rattle!! Mine actually come and goes and happen mostly when the engine has warmed up and has increased in frequency lately. It appears to come from the steering rack, but who knows. I'm thinking maybe the fuel line is loose and knocking around which is a known issue. Let me know how yours goes, extremely keen to get this fix.

I have those wastegate clip fitted already so that rules it out.

Thanks - I considered this, but the waste-gate rattle happens on acceleration - whereas mine is specifically and only on deceleration, or what I call "trailing throttle" (ie when you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal).

Ive got the exact same problem with my Mk5 GTI, on deceleration it just sounds like a rattle/flutter. exhaust shop say its coming from the heat shield on the downpipe, and would have to replace the whole downpipe :|
Its not affecting the drive, just annoying as hell! so will be replacing it oneday
