  • My New Tiguan

    Hey all

Pretty happy right now as my girlfriend and i put a depoait down on a Pepper Grey 132TSI Tiguan with DSG yesterday. Its only option was comfort pack which is all i really wanted from the factory. I would have liked a sunroof but oh well lol Providing the finance dude does his thing we should be picking it up this Saturday.

Plans for the car, run it in and just let everything settle in as it is and then get a tune done on it by Pulse Racing. Paul does custom tunes on the dyno which i think is a far better proposition that the other brands around right now.

While i am here i am also going to ask a few question as to where people got aftermarket bits for their Tiguan

I am looking at a nav unit and reverse camera for the car. Where do people go to pick up decent after market units? Alternatively, is there someone that sells the genuine VW units cheaper than the factory?

I am also interested to know if a steering wheel with paddles can be fitted to the Tiguan? I fail to see why you would put a DSG box in a car and not fit paddles to it....

I have looked on ebay and there seems to be lots of stuff available but i just dont know what the quality is like.

I may also upgrade some of the audio components as the stereo in the cars i test drove sounded a little meh for my liking, but will see what happens

We are looking forward toi picking the car up

    Brad

Hi Brad, exciting times picking up the car on the weekend! Still enjoying mine immensely every time i get in! I'm sure you'll love it!
All or most of your queries will be found by doing a quick search, you should be able to track down plenty of info re: Nav, RVC & paddle wheels using search... Have fun & enjoy!

Sharkie knows how to do the steering wheel swap.

You can get RNS510's off ebay from europe for around 1k.
Then you can get the reverse camera from ebay as well (check out aaron's thread on the mk6 golf cabriolet)

Just had a look for the Euro nav units but they dont come with an Aussie disc. Wouldn't that make them ridiculously expensive once the Aussie disc has been purchased? or are there cheap Aussie map discs floating around that work well also

I will get my head around it all soon enough i hope

My RNS510 came with Aussie maps loaded.
Are you searching on ebay.com.au but allow it to go worldwide?

Best bet is ebay.com.au then set it to worldwide search.
As far as i am aware there are 2 or 3 types of vagcom so make sure the one you get services your car and allows you to modify settings.

Cool, i will have to redo the search i carried out.

Will also have to find out how i get the right cable....

After doing 300 odd klms in the car i have a question regarding the DSG in these cars. Hopefully someone actually reads this thread

Do people find them changing into second gear when in drive before the clutch even seems to have taken up in first? I find mine shifts very very quickly and then when you accelerate to get it moving the clutch gets slipped lots or it would probably stall

I will mention it to the dealer as i dont think its right.... but i am probably wrong and they wont do anything about it. Probably needs a DSG tune to sort it out

If you're worried there's something wrong with the car first off I'd check if there any warning lights on the dash.

Second if you're still concerned I'd ring or better still drop back past the dealer (if you can).

There's a few things you'll have to get used to with your DSG transmission. If you drive around in "D" then things can be a bit sluggish off the line - particularly if you haven't come to a complete stop. The DSG will stay in 2nd gear and then will take a bit to get going (until the revs build past 2,000rpm and the turbo kicks in). For some reason (best known to itself) it won't drop down to 1st even if you stick the boot in. Solution is to drop it into "S" when you want to get going quickly.

Once up to speed you can either hit cruise control or put it back into "D" to kick it down a couple of gears.

I've tried using the Tiptronic box but it's all backwards to me.

When you drive around in "D", the DSG box is wired for economy so it will change gears to maximise fuel economy. When you drive in "S" it doesn't care about economy and is all about putting you in the right gear to give you best performance. Well that's the way I understand it after driving around for 6 months.

No warning lights and there isnt really anything wrong with it i am sure. It drives well in "S" mode but i shouldn't have to drive it in that for it to drive properly. I understand "D" is a more economical drive style, but to change into 2nd gear at less than 10kph seems a little to early to me. I am also a little concerned i am going to wear out the clutch prematurely so i will definitely be having VW go for a test drive with me at the 1500klm check over.

I noticed this with the Golf R i test drove and when i bought the Audi S3 it was quite different thankfully. Shame the Tiguan is like how it is but will see how it goes, i may need to adjust my driving style a little to suit

Yes. To get the best out of the car you have to be prepared to shift between "D" and "S" depending on what you want to do.

Unfortunately you can't drive it like a normal auto.

Would be good if someone came up with a DSG tune for the Tig ... or what it really needs is a "D" for normal driving (which does kick down when you put the boot in), "S" if you want to drive it like a rally car and "E" mode for economy (or maybe that should be "G" for go slow - to make DSG )

Out of interest. If you were to place the DSG into manual mode, whereby you personally upshift/downshift according to speed, and you were in highest gear, then you came to a complete stop without downshifting, would the DSG remain in the same gear or would it downshift of its own accord?

Downshift to 1 at complete stop.

But then you've got to remember when you take off that it's in manual mode and that you haveto push the stick to change up... I'm sure I'd get it if I used it often enough. Bring on a flappy paddle steering wheel.

                              Ahh, ok.

Yes, a flappy paddle steering wheel would be most befitting considering the nature of this transmission. I only had the car for an hour or so but I was suitably impressed with the DSG. Actually, I was very impressed. It has a Jekyll and Hyde disposition. Kind of like myself.

Anyways, keep us informed of your initial impressions. It'll be interesting to hear (read) your further thoughts as you become more accustomed to your new car. Of course, congrats on your purchase.

I still cant comprehend the 5 month waiting time.

                              Cheers
