Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Possible loss of performance?

    Hi All,
I've had my MY11 125TSi for almost 12 months (love it!!). Just lately, I get the strong feeling that performance of the engine has dropped off badly. In high gears, there just seems to be none of that beautiful "grunt" that I was used to... she labours and groans and kicks down a gear or 2 (7 speed DSG) and eventually gets going. Same daily commute, same fuel - but no exhilaration. Seems OK off the mark. No warning lights at all - and that's my question, I suppose: how confident should I be that a problem like I'm seeing would trigger a warning light? There doesn't sem to be a fault as such - just a strong feeling that something has changed.
    I'd value any thoughts...
    regards,
    John.

Could be high humidity/air temperatures as this usually robs the engine of performance as the air iss less dense and thus decreases performance.

    Are you using Premium unleaded?

Yes - always use 98 octane. I'll look for correlation with air temp - but I've only really noticed the "problem" in the last 4 weeks. By the way, it seems to be OK in Sports mode, but I almost always drive in "D", so it would be more difficult to tell whether something has changed in "S"...
I might grab the unused ignition key, to see if the engine/transmission has learned something about me that I didn't even know (regarding driving style).

can you not use regular e10 petrol in TSI engines?

Something like this happened on our old MkV GTI. Turned out some rubber part of the actuator was broken. Replaced it and it was good as new.

It was easier to narrow down cos we had installed a boost gauge and I saw the boost levels never exceeded 0.7 bars. With the BSR tune, it was doing 1.1-1.2 normally.

That's interesting. I guess it goes back to my original question... would the system be clever enough to realise that boost was low (if in fact that's the problem), and turn on a warning indication - or will a mechanic need to go digging in a log to find boost levels (I assume that's instrumented), and determine that it's "low"?

              I don't have a TIGUAN so I can't help you there.

In our case, there was no warning lights.

But apparently it was a known problem with the MkV engine.

If the MDI shows ~25 degrees C or above the performance takes a hit. I plan to address this by swapping my intercooler with the Audi S3 one.

You could also try resetting the throttle adaption by disconnecting the battery for a while (just to test the theory). There's also the rumour that if you push the throttle pedal down all the way (should feel a small button press in at the end of pedal travel) for 20 seconds while ignition is on (engine not running) it will also reset these adaptions.
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

Very interesting about the reset via the accelerator. I bet that isnt in the drivers manual!!

It adapts to your driving style over 60km or something like that. I had the battery disco'd the other week while installing the reversing camera - next time I went to drive it took off like a rocket

Check your owners manual or inside the fuel flap. I think you'll find it says 95 octane minimum. I doubt it has the "e10 suitable" sticker

No e10 in the TSI... try making a warranty claim and they discover e10 in there lol....
