Tiptronic automatic gearbox VS Direct Shift Gearbox

Hi guys,

I am planning to get my first family car - Tiguan.

103TDI - DSG Auto (Candy White)
Comfort package
Bi-xenons
Park Assist
Fog Lights

optional
Leather(depend on our budget)

How much can I get for those features? I am think about 46k without leather and 50k with leather.

I did a lot of research on the internet but i still have some questions.

What's the different between Tiptronic automatic gearbox and Direct Shift Gearbox. I know the pacific model will use Tiptronic gearbox and including fog light, comfort pack and park assist 2 for the same price as 2011 model. The price is very attractive(same price as TDI). Personally I prefer TDI but I am noob so no idea which one is good.

And a lot of people have the engine noise at 2500rpms problem. I am not too sure if this will happen in 2012 model in Australia or not.

Any suggestions would be much appreciate. Thanks.

They have a clip that fixes the rattle at 2500RPM now so get them to fit it when you pick the car up.

The tiptronic is the older slushbox style auto.
The DSG is basically an automated manual that changes gears quicker and has a mechatronics unit that a few owners have had replaced.

The DSG will take you a while to get used to however once there well worth it IMO... Never felt smoother gear changes!

Just picked up my Pacific yesterday and had a quick drive around.

Between the pacific and the TDI I test drove, at low speeds you can't really tell the difference, but if you accelerate hard, then yes the DSG shifts smoother, and quicker, but really, this is not a sports car difference is only marginally. Plus the Pacific (132kw) is much quicker than the TDI, so really what ever 'slowness' is exhibited by the Tiptronic auto is over compensated by the extra 25 KW.

Hard to say so far, as I'm still on my first tank of Shell V-power (98 ), and only done 63km.

The lowest the fuel consumption indicator showed was 10.8l/100 (40% urban, 60% Highway), it starts at around 22l/100 but don't be alarmed.

Under hard acceleration it goes, over taking was so easy. But I'm looking forward to getting the stage one tune by APR, wonder if it will make a noticeable difference, both in fuel consumption and acceleration.

I seem to hear some rattling noises too in my DSG but I don't know if it was at 2500rpm. What clip is this that can be fitted on? Any links or websites that show this?

All in all, I love the DSG. Some say it's over-rated but I still love how smooth it is. Also, what mechanic unit that was earlier mentioned here, that could be changed? I heard that the DSG can be 'upgraded' but I wasn't sure what that meant. What improvements can be experienced after changing it?

Dan, diesels will always sound rattlier than petrols... I wouldn't be concerned! The 'clip' is a fix for the TSI wastegate rattle that some have had done... (me inclusive).

I had a MY11 TDI DSG and now have a brand new MY12 TDI DSG. Straight up this is a sensational package that is smooth, refined, quiet and economical. Do not worry about noise, vibration or harshness in this model as VW has virtually eliminated these from the equation! Do yourself a favor and go the diesel.

I collected my Tig 103TDI DSG (MY12) on Saturday.Apart from slight hesitancy on getaway(Which has improved significantly in the 300 odd K's its done so far) the box is fantastic. Changes are lightning fast (Just look at tacho) keeps the engine on boost. Looks like its on its way to over 800k's on its first tank! and I reckon that will improve as the engine loosens up.
Moved from a 2007 CRV and apart from off the line this engine/gearbox combo is like day & night. So far very impressed. Stop/start system very descreete in operation.

Aaah got it Matt... Thought it meant all DSG's. Yeah the diesels do rattle more than the petrels but man... They are reaaaally quiet now compared to a few yrs ago! I'm impressed w it still and mine's the MY10 one!

What's the different between Tiptronic automatic gearbox and Direct Shift Gearbox.

I've owned 2 VWs with the DSG, a 147 Jetta in which I drove 65,000 KM with no issues, would probably still have it if it hadn't been writtten off and my current 147 EOS in which I've driven 42,000 KM also with no issues.

A while ago I had the use of a Tiguan 125 with the slushbox auto and the difference was chalk and cheese. When I jumped into the Tig, I had no idea if it was auto or DSG but as soon as it changed to second gear I knew it was auto. DSG changes are instantaneous with no perceptible interruption to acceleration, the auto, whilst it was OK, being used to the DSG, I found the changes to be slurred like any conventional auto.

I've also spent a number of days driving a 103 TDI DSG Tig and found the DSG a good match with the diesel, smooth, swift and capable.

One does have to adjust to the DSG, but for me it is superior to the auto.

These comments are based purely on my experience and relate solely to on road driving, no idea about off road.
