Electronic e-brake and flat battery related questions

Hi all,

was at work today and a thought came to mind, is it possible to push start a manual tiguan? (2011 & 4motion if it helps)

Yes i do realise its a noob question, but things that come to mind are how would i disengage the electronic handbrake if battery is flat? and secondly say if i managed to disengage it would push starting damage the 4motion system?

Finally say if my vehicle needed to be towed ie flat battery, broken, parked in illegal spot etc how would someone tow it? my main concern is if some random decides to tow my car would this damage the ebrake? is it possible for someone to tow it without me being there?

Not answering your question, but towing related.

I watched a tow truck driver fail to break into an illegally parked car. So he just dragged it onto the tray. Going by the bunny hopping from the front tyres, it was in gear. Not sure how he would unload it, maybe he got another truck to drag it off (or just had more time to break into it without the worry of the owner returning).

Have u checked the manual if there any hard/mechanical switch for the handbrake?
IMO I wouldn't do that. I would just get someone to jump start for me and I always keep a jump starter at home. Good luck mate

Look in the cars user manual under the relevant heading.... it will tell you if you can roll start it or not.

I would have thought it all depends on how flat your battery is. If your battery is low (too low to turn the car over) then it may still have enough charge to run the electronics (including the e brake) in the car. If the battery is completely dead then I'd say your e brake won't release either....but then again, if the battery is that low, I'd imagine in the modern EFI engines there's that much other electronics that you couldn't push start it anyway with no charge (even if the e brake was released).

I guess this is slightly off the point, but things like this make me wish they just had a normal handbrake!

What is so hard about a proper handbrake??

Skoda still use normal handbrakes on their range, so they are not inferior. Is it just that VW thought we were all soccer mums who couldnt lift the weight of a handbrake, so an electronic button would be easier??
