Caractere VW Tiguan

Just creating a new thread here on the Caractere Tiguan with the wide body kit. I simply love the look! Does anyone have it on their Tig's?

The Caractere show car (shown on various websites) has the full wide body kit and equipped w 20"x9", ET40 CW1 wheels from Caractere. Spoke to an authorized dealer for Carcatere, he said that to achieve that flushed look in that show car, they used an estimated 15mm (at least) wheel spacers.

I am wondering... Based on this info, what is the best wheel specs (playing in terms of size, width and offset) required to achieve that same flushed look against the wheel arches without the use of wheel spacers (since the use wheel spacers are illegal in most Australian states)? Say keeping between the options of 19" and 20" wheels.

Anybody out there that could advise? Thanks!!! Feel free to post your pics here too if you have a Caractere kit on your Tig!

Hi Transporter!

Thanks for that. Yes I have read those threads before as well. But somehow I didn't come across advise specifically for finding the right wheels size, width and offset that fits the Caractere kit without the use of wheel spacers.

Shd I read/post this question within other "aftermarket wheels" posts? Do you if there is Caractere distributor or dealer in Australia? ... I might jus Google that.

Would also be great to see pics of anybody putting up pics of their Tig w Caractere body kits.

If the original wheels has an offset of 40 by adding 15mm spacer, it will create similar effect with a wheel that has an offset of 25.

They are available but rare-ish.

Does the width of a wheel play a part in flushing it out too? I guess going from say a 19" or 20" x 9" to a 10" width doesn't really make a diff since its the offset that brings the wheel out or in yea?

Width is vitally important, for example: I went from 8" ET45 to 8.5" ET35, the offset made the wheel sit 10mm further out from the old one (ET45-ET35=10mm), also the extra width: 8.5"-8"=0.5" or 13mm=6.5mm per side (13mm is divided by 2 as width applies to both inner and outer sides)=6.5mm further out PLUS the extra 10mm offset= a total of 16.5mm further outwards than the old wheels. On the inside the wheel will be 10mm further out minus the extra width of 6.5mm=3.5mm further out then the old wheels on the inside.

Can be confusing but easy once you get the hang. Just remember the front struts on the tiguan can be somewhat limiting with width. The clearance is tight between the wheel and spring perch.

That's a article Pullstarter but I somehow feel your explanation is a lot better to understand becos you are using a real life example on a Tiguan! Thanks for that!

I managed to wrap around my head on ur explanation in the offset now. Hmmm... The OEM Tiguan wheels are 16"x6.5", is that right? because I haven't collected my car yet, I am not sure what is the distance from the outside of the OEM wheels to the original fender (or body, if theres a difference).... Have u (or anyone else) ever measured before?

Original wheels are ET33 too remember but I never measured it no. I'd say the best way with flares would be to install the flares first and then work out what wheel width and offset you need, would avoid much heart ache I think.

Yes I guess the best and most accurate way is fit the flares first before deciding on the wheel size. I guess what I was hoping to achieve was to find out the right size wheels first so that I can get an accurate quote on the wheels before deciding whether to go ahead w the whole package or not. Thinking: if need a much wider wheel and cant use spacers, how much would a custom wheel be with the tyres.

Chicken and egg thing for me. Lol...

By the way, is there a thread here somewhere that recommends a good car workshop? I live in the western suburbs of Melbourne - any around the Hoppers Crossing area or Melbourne city? If not, perhaps we can start a thread for this, u reckon?

With the narrow flares on my Tiguan, I'm running 22 x 9 ET28 with 265 tyres for the front and 22 x 10.5 ET30 with 315 tyres for the rear. It is without doubt the best fit and flush with the narrow flares as you can get. Wheels alone cost $5000 from USA. Tyres alone cost $1800. I went to spend another $1100 for just 2 315/25/22 rear tyres which i had to import from USA because the 295 didn't look as FAT.
