my mom's gonna be looking at one of these, but clay, you raise a good point - given that my parents are the kind of people who usually find a practical car, and hang onto it for 8 years or so, then it might pay to look at something that doesnt strain the engine so much, such as the 132tsi etc.

I must be living under a rock...I didn't even realise the Tiguan came in FWD. I thought they were all AWD

        Gen 1 were all 4Motion.

the Gen 2's are availalbe in a FWD model to cut costs and compete against the Mitsubishi ASX / Hyundai ix45 etc etc.

I think the changes to the new Tig are an improvement over the old startled koala look but I really don't like what VW are doing to the headlights on all their cars. Seems to be an Audi influence there and I absolutely hate what the look like. Overall I like the exterior look of the new Forester more.

Personally i don't see what the big issue is on putting the 118tsi in the tig, its only marginally heavier then a golf yet everyone is carrying on like vw announced they will be putting it into the touareg

Didn't they have all those issues with the 118tsi in the Golf 6 though?

The issues with the 118tsi in the mk6 was not because the engine couldn't handle the weight, it was an issue with the pistons which required a full engine rebuild but seems to have only effected 2009 and some early 2010 Golf & Jetta's which by now would have all been fixed under warranty.

Of course the 118TSI is used in the latest Passat too (as a DSG), and they are basically the same weight (within 10kg) and there aren't any complaints with that combination ?

                          No complaints "yet"

The 2.0TSI has been around for ages and has a documented histroy of performing well even when tuned.
Will be interesting to see how the 118 holds up after a few years of abuse.

The 118tsi in the passat is the 1.8 turbo, the 118tsi in the new tiguan is the 1.4 supercharger/ turbo. Same power output which is confusing, people in this thread are concerned that the 1.4 is too small of an engine for the tig.

The 1.4 twincharger is not putting out as much power for its size as the Golf R engine is so can't be THAT stressed. If it was increased to 2.0 it would only be putting out around 170kw. And in the Tig it doesn't have to haul anymore weight than it does in the Jetta with an extra person in it.

While the 1.4 might be a bit small for some - they are the folks that would pay the extra & choose a bigger engine.

For many (people like my father or one of my kids), the 1.4 would be a better choice than most. Surely choice of engine boils down to fitness for intended usage?
