Thanks for the info Philsan. Would installing the LED Load box only mean I could tow LED lighted trailers, or is it smart enough to detect normal globe lights on a trailer?

edit: Disregard, found the answer with some more google foo. The LED Load Box is an inline adapter to the trailer connector on the car so can be added or removed depending on the lights. Next question is do you get one with the towbar package or do you need to add it as an extra??? Hmm time to talk to the Dealership.

That's good news. Not too keen on keeping the tongue on when I'm not using it. Planning on taking it on and off at least twice a week so would like it to be as easy as possible.

I won't be towing a trailer. Will only be using it to carry around my road bikes. What do you mean by cancelling out the sensors ? Does it mean if i install the towbar my rear sensors won't work anymore ?

      Much appreciate the information.
I'm in a similar boat. Not planning on towing, just for a bike rack. I'm not sure if it's legal but just getting the towbar installed and not worrying about the electrics is what I'm considering. Of course when I come to sell it I guess I'll either need to get the electrics or remove the towbar.

When I was purchasing the bits and pieces for the towbar kit,yes according to the dealer that led load box was an additional cost over and above the normal towbar kit.But as someone on this site[umai naa I think it was]suggested, get a quote direct from the service dept. for the installation of towbar complete. If you go thru the sales dept. they will tack on their markup as well, thereby increasing the cost to you.
PM me if you think I can be of further help.I fitted the actual towbar[not the wiring harness] to my Tig myself. Not a big deal really.

            Hi there,

Can any of you Tiguan owners who have the original factory vertical hitch towbar installed please confirm if it's a 2in hitch or not? I'm in the process of waiting for one of these to be installed once my car arrives, and the dealer (nor anyone else in VAG it seems) can answer this simple question. Basically I want to know if this adapter will fit into it:
Curt 45013 Vertical Receiver Adapter f/2" Vertical Receiver to Standard 2"

I need this so that I can plug my existing bike rack into it.

If any of you can help it would be much appreciated.

            Thanks,

            BJ.

I suggest that you do not install a standard VW tower and then attach an adapter. Better to get a Harman Reece Bar installed. It will do what you want from the beginning.
              Cheers,

              Des

                Hey BJ,

I had the Genuine Tow Package installed via my Dealer a few months after taking delivery (long story on that...) a MY2011 Tig - I believe it's sourced from Best Bars & on mine it IS a 2" Hitch Receiver, and yes the hitch is vertical.

Can't say if VW are still using the same Package but that's what they were using 6 months ago on the pre-facelifted Tigs.

                Hope that helps!

Thanks. That's what I needed to know.

Annoying factor aside due to it's non-standard configuration, I think the idea is pretty good in that it can become completely invisible once you take the carrier off. My plan is to get this adaptor, attach it to the bike rack with a lockable pin and basically leave it on there, then just slide the hitch up into the vertical receiver. Might build a little trolley for my rack to wheel it into position.

Having said that, I predict what will actually happen will be that I just leave the adaptor in place.

Did you end up buying this? Did it work?

I'm thinking about doing the same for my Passat.
