The only reason I could think of, is that you do a lot of highway miles, and your local dealership only had one of the models to test drive, but you wanted the other transmission.
500rpm difference in engine speed at 110km/h for 10 hours straight, is a BIG difference, lol.
I would be mildly curious to know...
My manual rev's at a fraction over 2000 at 106 speedo/100 GPS in 6th. Maybe like 2050 or a bit more. Aftermarket rims, but pretty close to stock rolling circumference.

Noise, fuel consumption, etc.
That's the only reason I can think of though
You are on the money. It is entirely possible they are the same though, hence my curiosity - contrary to the uneducated earlier posting.
our manual tsi tig is very close to 50klm/hr in 6th, in fact 4,5 and 6th are pretty much 30, 40 and 50 kph/1000 rpm respectively
I have never driven a tig dsg, but for all its worth we have a golf dsg at work, and it runs at pretty much the same in top - ie 50 kph/1000 rpm. Both our Tig and the golf are TSI's, gearing will be different for diesels, about 55 kph/1000 in our friends 2009 manual tig.
As to when they should be engaged in their highest ratio - depends on your aim. Ours (with APR mod) is quite happy from 1500 rpm in 6th and I let it go down to at least 1300 rpm at times. I notice the DSG golf will happily go down to 60kph in top (about the same). As long as you aren't giving it a bootful at these low revs (ie expecting a lot) , then if the engine isn't labouring don't see a problem, boils down to how quickly you wish to pick up speed again.
