Tiguan - The First 100,000 kms

Well our TDI Tiguan has just clocked 100,000 in 18 months, so I thought I'd share my experiences.

Nothing!

We have not had a single issue. It has performed flawlessly, with much of this driving being done over unsealed corrugated roads, loaded with equipment, compressor fridge and two kids. We are routinely getting 1,000 kms per tank and couldn’t be happier.

We had a custom cargo barrier installed and that's the only modification we have made.

The vehicle has been maintained by a combination of Lennock in Canberra, Denlo Parramatta and more recently “Bugracer”.

Pity my 2011 Golf 90TSI lasted for only four days before being taken back by the dealer for three weeks to replace the DSG…

Hey Kiamba, that some K's ..... 100,000 in just 18 months. I thought our 103TDI did lots at about 25,000 per year !!

Great to hear no issues. I have a couple of light bulbs and one engine sensor. That's it .... in 60,000 Km's with about 50K a week on a rough gravel road.

Fuel consumption is excellent for a small SUV. Even with mix of city and country driving and a steep mountian climb every day we are getting sub 7lL/100Km's.

I am amazed that people still buy Foresters, we had one and it was thirsty as !!

Yeah, my wife uses the car for work and by nature of working in the equine industry has to travel quite a lot...

Awesome stuff dude!! I moved from a DSG Jetta to a tiguan a few months ago!! was the best decision I ever made! my Jetta DSG also folded...... great gearbox but couldn't risk the out of warranty cost if it happened again. All in all I'm loving the manual Tiguan!!

Sadly, a colleague of mine has ordered a Forester despite me trying to talk him into looking at a Tiguan. I wanted him to look at the TDI with the DSG as he is not really looking at using it off road. The closest he would get to off road would be when he has to go down the drive of a friend who has a small acreage out at Wangi. It is a properly prepared and maintained gravel road.

Now he is a retired engineer but he just could not get himself to get a diesel. He was not prepared to take that "leap of faith".

He takes delivery of a petrol Forester with standard auto transmission.

We made the mistake of test driving the Forester immediately after the Tiguan - no competition.

Yep I tested the forester too before buying my tig.

Two mins in the Tig and I knew it was the car for me!. Made the forester feel 10 years behind in quality!

I just wish I had considered the Diesel. Doing 1000kms per week, I sure feel the cost of the Petrol.

So now this thread turns into the second 100,000 km!

Thought I'd give an update as I doubt there are too many Tiguans out there with 200,000 km on them.

So in the second 100,000 kms we have encountered three issues (and all out of warranty...):

1. Exhaust sensors that measure delta P across particulate filter giving erroneous reading, cutting power etc. Minor and inexpensive fix, and a massive relief given the initial diagnosis was to replace the filter which isn't cheap. I was pretty surprised that the filter would be blocking as this car does ALL of its driving at highway speeds at high temp/air flow, thankfully it wasnt the case. Approx 110,000km;

2. Auxillary electric water pump. Approx 130,000km; and

3. Flywheel!! Was somewhat perturbed about this one! I was overseas and my wife calls me to tell me she's just arrived at the Sunshine Coast from Sydney and she needs $3,000 for a flywheel... Approx 160,000 km.

With the exception of these three repairs, we have been really happy with the vehicle. It is a delight to drive over long distances and if it's any indication of our satisfaction, we are about to get another one.

Anyone out there interested in buying one with 200,000 km on the clock?!!

Will be happy if i can get away with regular servicing & 'consumables' for 10 years/250000k's! I'm doing 'between service' oil changes myself to try & help the engine last a bit longer.

That's serious kms and a great story to read. I have a DSG Diesel Tiguan with 55K after two years all highway driving and have the same experiences of up to 1000km for a tank. Have to decide whether to keep or trade at the end of the year. Keep us posted on when you hit the 300K mark. (Mind you a previous car I had was a 240 Volvo wagon with 5 speed electric OD when it left me it had over 650,000km on the clock) so I would expect the Tig do a few hundred thousand as a diesel.

Flywheel, eh? So that's what she told you! I always wondered how she would get the costs of those extravagant dresses, necklaces and ear rings past you!!

Hi All

We now have 100,000 Kms on our 2009 103Kw TDI. No further issues since replied in this tread at 60,000kms.

Our driving of 25,000 per year is mostly highway with some steep mountain climbing daily and gravel road to our rural property.

So total issues in 4yrs are a couple of light globes in the tail lights and a faulty engine management sensor. The sensor didn't change the driving at all, ie. no limp mode or other interference.

My only concern is space saver spare. I punctured a tyre on our gravel road and fitted the space saver in order to get down to Nowra to get a new tyre. Two disadvantages, speed limited to 80K and no towing with space saver.

In summary great car. My next vehicle is definitely another VW.

Great to hear a good news story Ralph. I will be looking at the next generation diesel Tiguan in 2015
