Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • TDI operating oil temp

Hey guys - those of you with the TDI tiguan, what temp does your oil run at under normal driving conditions? I was quite surprised to see that after a short (10km) drive, the Tiguan's oil temp was hitting 100C. In the Golf R, I average around 85C.

I'm just wondering if this is a characteristic of the turbo diesel engine (to run a higher oil temp), or if maybe the R has something the Tiguan doesn't (like an oil cooler).
    My car: MY18 Arteon
My car #2: MY22 Volvo XC40 Pure Electric
Her car: MY22 Skoda Octavia Limited Edition Wagon

I have a petrol Tig and driving steadily it reaches about 95 degrees after about 10 minutes, dependent on the ambient temperature if course.

I know it doesn't exactly relate to your diesel but it may offer you some kind of comparison.

The normal tempearture for oil is up to 120 deg. C for normal driving. During normal commuting you will see 95-105 deg C. most of the time in the TDI, slightly more during summer.

Sounds like what my TSI runs between... Maybe 98-105 for my 125 once warmed up.

If you have a look under the front bumper I think you'll find that the diesel Tig (certainly the older models like mine) DOES have an oil cooler !! And quite a big one at that !!

          Cheers

That's pretty much the range I get, though I don't recall seeing it over 105.
