  • Sump plug thread size?

I was doing an oil change this morning and got to thinking what size is the thread on the sump plug? Unfortunately I only thought this after the job was completed.
The reason I was thinking was, there are magnetic sump plugs available for Porsche's, and we have one in our Boxster.

The phisical size appeared to be the same & I have a spare Boxster sump plug if anyone in Sydney,s southern suburbs is doing a change shortly, we could try and see if it fits.

The 1.8Ts and everything before that, has been the same in my experience.

EXCEPT the ABF. Which is much larger and therefore harder to find a new washer for, oil also leaves the sump at a massive increase in volume and velocity, overwhelming the hole in those "jerrycanonthesidedrainpanthingys" and dumping at least 2/3rds of it on the driveway.

If it is indeed the same size as the Boxster, it would be good way to see how much metal is floating around in the engine oil.
I will email the manufacturer for their sizing.

Ok I have had a response from the guys in the USA and their plug is 18mm thread, so will not fit. Our si 14mm (thanks Greg).

They pointed me in the direction of this one from ECS Tuning.

I'd suggest a group buy of some sort for something like this!

From experience, ECS charge a standard shipping charge which is steep for 1 unit that only costs $11.

I reckon for such a small item you could pack 8-10 units for the same shipping charge.

I'm using magnetic sump plugs in all our cars for looong time, I always made them myself.

$11 is really cheap considering the cost of good quality magnet that will withstand repeated changes in temperature over 100 deg. C is over $5.

Anyway, I made a batch of the magnetic sump plugs with long Neodymium magnets (N4 with theoretical holding force of over 21kg. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f24/...ugs-59660.html
