Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Speaking of high beam, that's one thing I think is rather poor in the Tig. The high beam is very very average both in terms of light spread and intensity.

      HID kit looks good!

Are HID kits frowned upon here in the forum? Are they legal to install/run?

The install looks pretty straight forward and end result looks great!

Interested to hear some feedback RE: HID upgrade kits.

I don't know about Ausi but here in NZ you won't get a Warrant Of Fitness (needed every year when new and every 6 months later on) with HID bulbs in "normal" reflectors as they "spray" light all over the place and can blind drivers coming the other way. There are some systems of heard of that overcome this by having an actual special reflector that goes with the bulb BUT I'm not at all certain of how you manage to fit them without pulling your headlight to pieces. So, here anyway, a kit like that will be usable until the first time you need a WOF and then you'll be made to remove it AND you'll possibly be blinding everybody coming towards you.

        Cheers

Retrofitting HID lights cost a fortune to do legally in Australia.
Considering the Osram Off-road's cost about $80 landed I am happy I went with the bulbs instead of Xenon's

These look to be Osram H7 65w Off Roads.... Price is very cheap!

              Fake's?

For that price they are worth a punt!!

team_v: is there much yellow to your's? Or are they pretty crisp white?

I wouldn't touch those eBays one. have fake written all over them.

Just purchased from Rallye and Night Breakers (for another car) from candlepowers. Pretty cheap postage when combined. Surprisingly the Rallye were cheaper then the Night Breakers..!?!?

Bugger, should of ordered the Night breakers from POwerbulb.com, they are free delivery and cheaper overall!

edit: Actually nope, Candlepower cheaper as Powerbulb was a 'per bulb' price. *phew*

Is their anything apart from the price that makes you believe they are fake? There is some good feedback and have sold 60.

For $20 I'm going to give it a gamble, but I am a gambling man

Don't suppose anyone has a photo of a legit osram 65w to compare markings?

Aren't you gambling on them not burning out your headlight wiring (=approx $400 including labour) not the $20 cost ???

Is it even legal to fit those bulb in? It says off-road use.

No. The reason why it says "off road use only" is that in Europe and Australia, headlights with an output of more than 2,000 lumen requires headlamp washers and automatic levelling systems.

                            OEM D2S 35W = 3,200 lumen

                            Osram H7 65W = 2,100 lumen

The problem is that no one would go to the trouble of fitting such systems just for a halogen setup (you'd be crazy not to go all the way and get a HID setup, actually).

But then again, when was the last time you ever saw the authorities measure light output to determine a bulb's legality?

I did all 4 globes with the Osram Rallye 65w, all up a bit over AU$100 inc postage from Candlepower. Make sure you check all the shipping option ços the low cost option doesn't sound like it by the descriptions...can't remember the exact details...

Notable improvement but not a patch on decent driving (spread not pencil) lights. Brighter without the wanky (IMO) fakey light absorbing glary blue tint. Better reach too.
Wouldn't go to the std globes again. I'm still considering the $1000+ to fit nudge bar, lights, loom and nice VW rotary switch.

They are a improvement but IMHO maybe 10% to overall lightoutput which makes sense comparing 65w to 55w.
When everyone is reviewing these and making comments such as they would never go back to stock 55w i think it is overstating their case.I bought these and expected a 200% improvement given the way everyone reviews them.Logic gives you the true answer instead.

Given the chance i would save my money and not buy them as there is no noticable difference compared to stock or other cars when driving in the city.,and yes I did buy the original ones not the fakes.
