  • Tig tdi question

Can anyone shed light on this??
Got home last nite after about a 40 min. drive which included a 90kph section of about 10k's.Drove into my garage and let the tig idle for about a minute[to let turbo wind down]
shut the car down lights off, ignition off,got out and noticed a fan noise still going[no indication of turbo o/heat] OAT was 21.5 celsius.Fan kept going although I figured it wud stop soon.Still kept on going so I restarted the car and let it idle again for another minute or so.Shut the engine off and fan noise ceased.I have done this drive several times and never had this happen before.Tig has only done about 1900klms.Any clues??

    This is normal.

Restarting the car with no airflow through the radiator would only heat it up more.

As long as you haven't been running it hard in the last kilometre or 2 just stop the engine and get out. No special treatment is required.

As Gavin says, it is designed to be that way. Our Tig does the same.

Thanks for your prompt replies.Bit of a relief, thought I might be in for some turbo troubles.

Valid concern esp if its the first TURBO eqiuped car to the household.
          Yes it is normal.
why ? to aid coolant flow to run (water cooled) since sensor (even in stationary mode) would have indicated higher temp level. Where one has to shut the engine and rus off, the technology build into the car will take over and self cool.

I would second- guess that to get to your house, (from the longer stretch of straight -constant speed road) you do have couple of shorter streets where the car wold have gone through some lower gears. These last few minutes of quick few left right street turns would have spooled the turbine prior to an engine shut of at your garage.

Now, one can only suggest to watch your last minutes of driving prior to the final stop by short shifting the gearbox (manual mode -auto or DSG) - minimising revs to < 3k RPM. easy thing to do on TDi due to its torquey low range. otherwise jsut rely on the technology of german engineers. Its all good. Sleep tight.
          happy days.
