OK, ours is due shortly for its 15k sevice. I will be doing the oil and filter change prior to taking the vehicle for the service.
How much of the service price is for the oil and filter?
IE what is a reasonable charge for our car?

As Transported says, i've done 2 now & ~30 for the filter, ~70 oil & ~5 for a sump plug (recommended).
Dont forget there's the labour component, probably $100.

Has any TDI owner had issues with low oil levels before the 15,000km service?

            Everyone, just about.

It's quite normal to drink a bit of oil in the first 15,000klms. It should improve after the first oil change.

I did my first oil change at 2000km. I have not had any oil consumption at all.

                There goes your warranty.

The oil is not meant to be changed until 15,000klms.

I've had 2 seperate VW parts dept managers & a highly regarded independant Veedub workshop owner/operator/specialist refute that claim. Went with my gut & did what Pinarelloman did, & again at 10000... I feel good!

A parts department manager doesn't have a whole lot of say over a warranty claim.

The dealer warranty clerk would've been a better sounding board.

I service and repair cars for living for more than 30 years and I remember “the black death” in the early 1980’, the sludge problem (really only another term for the Black Death) after that and it seems to be the ongoing problem in the modern age engines. However, those of my customers who service car more often have minimal or no deposits inside the engines, even long after 150,000km. I see many cars serviced every 15,000km having an excessive sludge build up already at 60,000km.

It is amazing how short memory some people have.

Just bear in mind that, the direct injection TSI engines can contaminate the sump oil more than the port injection ones.

                      Hyundai less than 100,000km

Hyundai 200,000km with regular 15,000km oil changes (this customer disregarded the time and went by km's only)

This is what you need to look for in your TSI
Ideally you want your engine at 120,000km look like this or better (Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8L)

Unfortunately, it aint all that black and white.

The examples you've shown are quite familiar to me, having done 7 years of my trade with Toyota and Hyundai. The sludging in our opinion, and through investigation of the service history (or lack thereof, in most cases) and driving style, found that even with a car serviced by the book (we also promoted the intermediate oil change sevices), it was the way the car was used, that seemed to be the cause of most of the sludging.

Short, stop-start trips were the major contributor, followed by engines that were subjected to 30-45,000klms of non-servicing.

What I was referring to in the previous post, was that VW may be less inclined to honor the warranty on the engine, if the oil initially used in the engine is changed before 15,000klms, and a complaint of higher-than-normal oil consumption is lodged. Hyundai followed a similar idea, but were fine with the 7,500klms service.

At the end of the day, it's up to the owner of the car to decide how and when they service it. All I can do is try and point them in the right direction, based on my experiance and the procedures that I currently adhere to.
