  • 1st Gear Problem??

    Hi all,

I just picked up my new MY11 103TDI DSG on Friday and am liking the ride height and drive so far.

However, on the way home today, the car developed some weird habits. When slowing down or coming to a complete stop, the car will have suddenly jerk forward when it change gears from D2 to D1. Looked at the MFD display and there was a flashing icon of a spanner next to the clock. Looked through the owner manual but found nothing. I then turned the engine off, waited a while and turned it back on again. No spanner icon this time but it still jerks quite badly from D2 to D1. This can't be normal can it?

Tried reversing out of a car park lot after a trip to Coles and it jerked even harder from Park to Reverse.

    Any advice?

    Thanks heaps

    Cheers
    Steve

That doesn't sound right. My own DSG experience has been 'Jerky' but none like yours. Definitely go back to the dealer and take a mechanic with you in a drive.

Did you have a flashing spanner icon next to the clock display too?

Yep, will probably take it back to the dealer for them to have a look....just that the dealer is the other end of town!

No, never have that flashing spanner icon. Since it's a long drive, don't take no for an answer, insist there is a problem.

          Thanks 99Reza.

Was thinking of just calling up roadside assistance since the dealer did say they will 'take care of everything' for 3 years.

Am just worried about the 45min drive over....maybe I should have bought from my local dealer..

Since you mentioned there is a local dealer in your area, you can try their service dept first. I don't see why they wouldn't help you.

I just got my DSG car back today after getting the whole Gearbox replaced ,and mine was only jerky when taking off from a standing start
First they replaced the Metchatronics but did not correct the problem and still showed heaps of fault codes then VWA gave them permission to replace the whole Gearbox its now running as sweet as .

Ian, have you done the launch thing in yours? I'm still not converted as to whether or not this prolongs the life of a gearbox...
Sorry, probably not helpful, but lovin' my manual !

                  Hi Ian,

Can I ask if you're on a Diesel too? Mate said that diesels tend to be a little jerky but he too was a little shocked about how mine was.

The problem really would be from D1 to D2 and back to D1 from D2. It also affects R gear. Did yours have that too?

Geez, my car is less than a week old!

Firstly mines a GT Diesel and i only found out by going to an independent VW service Center other wise i might not of been any wiser about the extent of the DSG faults , Bea from Camden GTI showed my what was wrong with mine , and it took 3 attemps by Barlo before it was fixed . And i personally wrote to VWA and was straight forward about what i was told by Camden GTI only then did they agree to replace the Metronics unit to no avail and only then did they agree to replace the whole gearbox.
Look mine drove perfectly once i was mobile but was very hesitate when taking off from the lights,

Thanks Ian. Will have to get it check out, but it seemed to have behaved itself a little bit better today and the Reverse gear jerk is not has violent...either that or I'm getting used to it.

                      Cheers,
                      S

I have a new diesel too and have done 1500km in the last week and a bit in it. It is running sweetly but it can get in situations where the turbo lag creates hesitancy but nothing like what you have described. It is good to see that VW has exchanged the DSG unit, but I would not expect any less as a new owner.

                          Hi Guys,

Heard back from my local dealer (the one nearest me and not the one I bought the car from) and their diagonosis was that the gear settings were wrong.

It sounds a bit lame as it took them about 5 days to figure it out with consults from Germany. The test report says it carred out basiec settings of mechtronics, but roadtested it and found to be ok.

I'm not too sure if this is something that should be accepted. Should I demand that I get a new DSG, or at least extend my warranty or get free servicing?

The Principal of the dealership where I bought the car from said he would call to speak about this, but of course he didn't. He was quick to 'distance' himself from this fiasco and saying that it's a "Germany" thing.

Quite disappointed with this whole incident...
