MK5 Golf to Tig ?

Not looking to do anything that serious off road as I allready have a diesel 4x4 dual cab ute for that - more just for some soft road access camp sites that can get a bit greasy and rutted. None of these type of vehicles have tyres with a sidewall profile suitable for anything even mildly serious off road once you air them down a bit.
Freelander is probably the pick for that type of stuff. VW is a far from the mainstream as I'm game to venture on a 40K+ purchase though !

After a few weekends of test drives we finally settled on a 103TDI Comfortline Golf Wagon.

Unfortuntely the Tiguan just doesnt have enough cargo room for us - it's really no bigger than our MKV hatch. This means offroad duties remain with our other car, but this is ok seeing as the reality is that this offroad travel would have been a small percentage of total travel with the new car - just would have been good to have the option.
The Golf Wagon will be a better car for the majority of the travel we need to do.

Any reason why you did not look into the Skoda brand?

The Octavia TDI Wagon is getting rave reviews.
The Scout is also due out soon.

I'm with you on this one....that's why I'm looking at the Tig now and not waiting for the Yeti.

Went to a dealer (Bayside) during lunch time today and they said they've sold out on TDI Tigs and the earliest was in Oct 2011. Called up another dealer and they said I should go see them as they have some left in stock and delivery can be in a week or two.

Read somewhere on this forum that they would be such a wait, but might just go over the weekend for a look.

I drove both 125TSI and 103TDI Tig's - both in DSG. I found the difference was much smaller between petrol and diesel than it seems with Golf. While still considering a Tig we had decided that a 125TSI would be the way to go.
We had negotiated down to 38K d/a for a 2010 build MY11 125TSI Tiguan with comfort pack, bluetooth, mats and mdi - this was with the current promotion. Pretty good buying at that sort of price !

Burwin in Ferntree Gully had a few diesel DSG Tigs left last week if that helps you.

went for a test drive over the weekend was a little disappointed that I didn't get to really run the car due to the traffic but was rather impressed with the great turning circle and it really does handles like the MK5 Golf. Love the driving height too.

On a side note, was offered $41K for TDI with comfort pack, metallic paint, MDI (and cable), reverse sensors (no park assist) and mats.

Love to hear some thoughts.

Based on the dealings I had when looking at TDI Tig's, and the small amount of them around I'd say thats a good price ....

Check the build date - when looking for a Golf wagon we found some "new" ones with 09 build dates !

No it wasn't. Was quoted that at another VW. It's a MY11 but built in 2010. As its' part of the Tiguan free CTP, Rego, stamp duty etc promo, there's only very limited options. I can't even have 18" wheels or leather seats even if i wanted to.

Still having a think but was of course told "Better hurry quick, the sale is ending soon and we may not have any more stock... etc etc"

for all its worth we started out looking for a diesel and in the end got a petrol because getting a diesel in what we wanted proved difficult. In the end we got the 125 tsi (a manual with park assist etc) for $35k drive away which was great. Have never regretted getting the petrol and if fuel supply starts getting tight, diesel fuel ends up about the same price as premium anyway (but still better fuel econ). This is because Australia pays the spot price for diesel on the Singapore market, so last time supply was tight (3-4 years ago) diesel was the same price as premium or more.

we have since done the APR stage 1 upgrade. I dont use the full power that often but when I do it always brings a smile. What I do use a lot is the extra torque which is bloody impressive. If you are going to do much towing or would like heaps of power/torque in reserve, the 125 tsi with APR upgrade is awesome. We went on a camping trip recently and no sign of struggle towing a loaded trailer weighing 400+kg up a hill on a dirt road at just 55klm in 5th gear! Rejoining the hwy the acceleration up to Hwy speed was very impressive even with towing 400kg+ behind us. Again I dont use the extra power that often, but I love the extra torque and its great having so much in reserve when you need it (or just want it). The fuel economy is not as good as the diesel of course, but bloody good nonetheless (if driven sensibly) and you pay a lot less originally.

Thanks for the input jimbomort. Appreciate any and all feedback. Was thinking of the Diesel as work is about 45Kms (one way) from home and there's quite a bit of highway driving albeit it's mainly start stop in the mornings.

Strange that we have to pay a premium on Diesel as compared to Singapore. Isn't Diesel better for the environment and shouldn't the Govt should be supporting that?

Have been reading about the APR upgrades on this forum and it is on the list!

Its no so much we pay a premium per se, its just there are much bigger players in that Market that Australia, so when supply gets tight ourselves and other smaller players end up paying the spot (marginal) price for our diesel. An issue when the market is tight, not an issue when its not.

Diesel engines are more efficient in how they use the fuel (much higher compression), but diesel per say is not really any better. In fact if you look at the green guide for cars, quite a few diesel cars dont rate as well as petrol cars. Part of it is their particulate and other emissions and secondly while economy is better it is balanced out in part by more CO2 emissions per litre consumed (diesel more energy 'dense' than petrol). For example compare the Golf tsi with the gold tdi on the green cars guide (I haven't looked, but guessing the tsi comes out better overall even with the golf tdi conforming with tougher standards on diesel emissions)
