  • Rozza's New 147 Tiguan

    Hi Guys

Thought I'd create a new thread here (with much inspiration from team_v's Tig thread) as I think it'd be a great way to look retrospectively at where my Tiguan purchase started, and the modifications I'm going to make over time. I'm hoping this may make for interesting reading down the track, as I have no experience in modifying vehicles, as this is my first attempt. I've gleaned a lot of useful information from others here, so this is my time to share. Besides, this is the wife's new ride, so it'll also serve as an interesting experiment in getting modifications over the line!

I took delivery of this beautiful new machine on Xmas Eve, about 11AM on 24/12/10. Specs as follows:

    2011 147TSI 7 Spd DSG (Candy White)
    Park Assist with Camera
    New York 18" Alloys
    Panoramic Roof
    Vienna Leather
    Bi-Xenon Headlights
    RNS510 Sat Nav
    Adaptive Chassis Control
    Off Road Technology
    Premium Bluetooth
    MDI
    Side Steps
    Chrome Boot Trim
    Door Sill Scuff Plates
    Window Tint
    Paid $64600 drive Away

The beauty of this...whilst a little expensive...I got to drive away in it with no wait whatsoever, so this makes me a very happy camper!

I've managed to do about 400 km's over the last few days, and should've taken a few happy snaps prior, as it's now needing a clean

I'll post some pics in the next few days, but first impressions as follows:

Ride quality is unexpectedly good, it really is a smooth drive (very different to the MY08 Polo GTi (funnily enough), which was the wife's previous drive). Interior quality is great, cabin noise is minimal and the standard sound system is very nice indeed (missed the Dynaudio as this was an in-stock purchase). The panoramic sunroof is something to behold, and even better at night out in the countryside.

The only negative at the moment would be the slight lack of engine response, as the DSG slushbox is taking a little getting used to. This will lead to the first modification (again, thanks team_v for the suggestion) - APR Stage 1 ECU Remap - to sort out this seeming lack of response.

Wow, you really got a loaded Tiguan there, almost every option???
Quite the opposite to my path lol.

Just note that the DSG will learn your driving style and will adjust so it may pick up better the more you drive it.
However if you change between yourself and your wife driving it then it may get confused.
The lag is also apparent in the Mk6 Golf's as the R owners are complaining about it.

Stage 1 is definitely a worthwhile modification to do as it will make the car pick up and move when you want it to, giving you the power equivalent of the V6 SUV's.

    Can't wait to see pictures.

Yeah, it's been said more than once that I have more money than brains...lol! It really was a case of 'if I've got to wait til June for the R, I want something in stock to drive immediately to appease my R yearnings!'

$@!? The DSG learns my driving style, are you serious?!?! Going to have to make the Mrs drive like me then!

Have a search on the forums about DSG and you will see that it apparently learns your driving style, however no one is able to give a solid answer as to how long it takes.
It might also be outlined in the owners manual.
This is mainly brought up in the mk6 forum.

After driving the Tig you may not want an R

          OK...
+1 - I got off my a$$ and took a couple of photos...
          -1 - I couldn't be a$$ed cleaning it prior to the shots

I put the side steps on it because IMHO I think they look cool, add a certain schoolboy toughness to an otherwise vanilla lookin' mini-SUV No, it's not that we're short 4'5" oompa's...really, we're not!!!

            Looks great.
I keep forgetting how the stock lights look lol.

The white with white leather looks pretty ace.
I would definitely black out that grill though :p

Thanks Maximus, not bad considering I hadn't really looked into a Tig until walking past my local dealership a couple of months ago, spotting this beast and taking it for a TD. I actually TD the 125 TSI as well as the TDI, but settled on this one beacuse it had all the bells and whisltes, and for once, no wait time with a Volkswagen?!?!

Now starting to get itchy feet after having only done about 500 km's in the Tig, and have decided that modification is the best scratch for my itch! I think I've mentioned it previously, but from a new Tig owners perspective, the only kink in the armour is the lack of response and slight under-poweredness (is that a word, me thinks not!) of the engine.

From all the many posts I've read, and advice I've been given, the absolute best way to start on the modification roadway is an ECU remap and specifically, an APR ECU remap. Luckily for me, I have an APR dealer locally (AutoWerks at Charmhaven), so will be contacting them shortly to discuss the Stage 1 remap.

I'll post more after my discussion with AutoWerks from my novice perspective in the hope that this may prove valuable to other mod-noobs in the future.

                    paul,
you'll find Simon at Autowerks really helpful.
i was in the other day having the oil changed on the 911 and they were doing a re-map on a Mk6 GTi. there is a special on at the moment and you get all the extra features for the standard price, you can also have a test re-map done to see if it works for you,
might see you there as my 147 is delivered this friday, finally
2011 Tiguan 147TSi DSG, Silver Leaf, BiXenon, 18"s, ACC, leather, tow pack, bluetooth, now in the shed !!
2007 Golf GTi Reflex Silver DSG, other worthy but aircooled German cars...

Probaably not right to consider DSG as a 'slush'-box...always mechanically engaged...no hydraulic torque converter to slush.

thanks epiolt, will be calling Simon Wednesday to see when I can get the ECU remap done. I'm interested to know what the typical run-in km's would be? I was thinking that a remap on a brand new Tig would not be totally sensible, and maybe there should be a few km's on the clock before upgrading the power? Again, this thread is from a noob's perspective when it comes to performance enhancement, so that's why I'm asking the question.

I've managed to scratch up 600 or so in the first few days, but I was thinking a nice 1,500 or so, or am I mislead as these engines are built to be modded immediately? what are your thoughts?

Thanks ethos, read: new VW guy, and not 'mechanically inclined!!!' though I see the funny side. Interestingly, I'm coming from having 310kw's on tap, to 147kw's...so the only way I can describe the 'lag' in the Tig is a sense of 'slushiness'

I'm sure (and have been told repeatedly) that the Stage 1 ECU remap will take care of a large part of this 'slushiness' (notice I am now calling it slushiness - not slush per se), but I am also fully aware that I am opening pandora's box here (team_v, I'm sure you'd agree!!!) as from what I can tell, mods are like tattoos, once you start it's incredibly hard to stop. Just ask my wife who is PO'd as I am incessantly surfing for possible mods one week into ownership. And I've got an R arriving in a few months as well!!!

Yes, sorry, corrected in sig...not to mention the 2008 Polo GTi in the garage as well (can't quite fit it in the sig for some reason).
