  • Help - rear parking sensor

Mrs recently reversed into a palm tree, no damage really except the drivers side rear parking sensor copped the burnt of it and had a small piece of bark wedged in b/w the sensor and its thin rubber housing. After that it has been 'stuck on' - so whenever the parking sensors are engaged, its convinced there is somethign we are getting close too and is relaying the appropriate noises. I think the sensor is emotionally damaged from the experience.

I have climbed underneath the car and with some fiddling removed the sensor (its quite easy), cleaned it, removed the piece of wood and put it all back together. It looks the goods, no obvious problem at all, but has made no difference - sigh.......

I have checked the manual but couldn't see anything on resetting or the like, but I haven't as yet tried checking thru the MFD.

So not sure whether its just a reset type issue or whether I need to replace the sensor or more than that. Be nice if its just a reset, but suspect may be more of a problem than that.

    Any clues/suggestions be much appreciated.

The same thing happen with my C-Class, I think a stone chip might have hit it, found a slight scratch. It just refuse to work, gives me two red line in the visual. I think you need to replace the damaged sensor.

Borrow one from the front (if you have) and see if it makes any difference.

          Hi,

"obviously didn't work this time either - or was it a computer PEBKAC error.

Yup, worked straight away. The sensor itself is pretty cheap.

transporter - good suggestion, I'll try with one from the front and see if that works, and likewise swap it with and see what that then does to the front reading

99reza - thankls for the confirmation and thats nice to hear it was realtively cheap, hopefully VW will be the same

If you can change the sensor yourself please do so. I almost fell of my chair when they gave me the invoice. Sensor cost $185 (for the whole array, not just one), labour $400!!!

Why did they replace whole array? Was all of them broken/faulty?

jimbomort before you test it, check if you can buy individual sensor and if not, ask why? The sensors could be coded together (there could be communication between the sensors in bumper bar and it could be the reason why they needed to be replaced as an array)

The array is wired in one piece. I Fitted afterMarket, involves removing rear "bumper" . need to be very careful to break any clips particuarly on the rear wheel arch trim ( not really designed to be removed ),

Yup, as per Ted. It's wired in one piece. It might be possible to replace individual sensor, but i don't think you can get them individually.

thanks guys, per my original post individual sensors are easily removed, so they may be wired as an array, but cant see why you would need to replace the whole set when individual sensors are easily removed and put back in place. The only Q in my head is whether sensors are interchangeable, they may not be so not sure yet that I can swap around to test if sensor is the problem (per Transporters suggestion), but will know soon. I'll check with VW and check for any identifiers on the sensors. Stay tuned.

Yes I will be replacing myself if at all possible. 99reza didn't notice your post until after posted, but anyway, stay tuned.
