Air Con not working in a new Tiguan.

Just a head up Tig owners about AC hose fitted to close to the radiator fan.

This afternoon my wife came home and told me that the air conditioning stooped blowing cold air after what she described as short hissing sound something like water running. My first reaction was RTFM. Of course, I had to go and check it. I couldn't believe my eyes.

I found that AC hose was fitted too close (and is touching) to the rotating fan, which cut through the hose.

So, everyone just check that your AC hose is not touching the fan blade (it is round and easily mistaken for the fan shroud)

I had a quick look at my 125TSI and found, to my relief, that the A/C hose is about 5-7 cm clear of the fan.

Sorry to read of your missfortune, Transporter. It could well be an isolated concern, whereby the pipe may have been skewed out of shape enough to cause incorrect positioning of the rubber section.

You'll have it replaced under warranty, no problems.

Funnily enough, Monday was hot enough for me to finally convince myself that my a/c was not working.. have had the car for 3 months already!
Drove the car to the vw service centre.. there were like 3 mechanics crowding around that area for almost an hour. I think it's exactly the same problem.
I suspect it wasn't working on the day I picked it up. I've always felt that turning a/c on and off didn't made much difference but thought it might needed some break in time!! yeah silly me..
I'm booked in again for monday as they needed to order the replacement parts. Hopefully just bad luck for us.

MY aircon failed @ about 2wks, needed a new compressor - tha aircon would take about 15min to to start "cooling" -- lead to another issue While replacing the compressor the technician disturbed a bleed/sensor hose off the turbo and about 10 kms after picking it up the unit car lost power when it disconnected completely . returned to the dealer immediately had drive in tiptronic mode to get there , got a loan jetta for the night whilst they worked out what had happened

I suspect many"lemon" vehicle have only one manufacturing issue but inadequate tech experience lead to the later issues. ( it very had to gain experience when modern motor cars are so reliable

I totally agree with that last paragraph, Ted. Product knowledge specific to any one manufacturer is very hard to come by these days, as tecnicians are now more likely to chase the dollar at another workshop, than to remain loyal to the one they're at.

My old MK5 GTI had a similar problem. The aircon hose at the front was touching the accessory belt. I had it replaced once under warranty and within weeks of it being replaced there were signs of it making contact with the fan again.

I know 2 other people who had a similar problem as mine

The stock VW engine mounts allowed a lot of engine movement so it really does need a fair bit of clearance.

Just went out and had a good look. Surely enough it's as Transporter has described.
The fan cut opened the hose.. Still pressing against it so there's some resistance/friction on the fan. I'm hoping this wouldn't have over stressed the fan motors too much and cause an early failure later. I realized there's a rubber tube holder thingy further inside the bay so this ac tube must've came off it at some stage. I popped it back in and now there a clearance to the fan. Can't believe those guys who looked at it just left it as it is.
Anyway I notice that those fans only turn on when I switch off the engine and they run for about 30sec or so.. I take it they're not suppose to spin while the car's running? Sorry I'm pretty clueless with how a car works.

Holder at the bottom is most likely OK, the problem might be in the shape of the AC hose that is routed to close to the fan because of the Aluminium pipe shape. I marked it with the red line and will take better picture tomorrow and will compare it to the replacement part.



Probably a bad badge of AC hoses.

Just an update.

Tig is booked in with the dealer on 26 of November, that's 2 weeks without air conditioning.

They must be busy.

Could this just be an issue with the layout of the diesel Tigs?

I don't know, unless they have a different fans and different AC condenser. The AC hose shape is most likely fault (bad badge of the AC hoses).

Anyway, here is my temporary fix, so the fan doesn't get ruined or even worst car catches on fire.

I have about a 1.5mm clearance. I can't tell from your pics and can't get a shot with sufficient contrast to show it but mine has a plastic clamp further down about 75mm which appears to be their to locate the hose using a adjacent water house. Is it there or broken in your case?
