The new steering wheel is much better than the old one. I'm disappointed that it didnt have a new grill.

I am the opposite, i actually dislike the new steering wheel, it looks too cluttered and the 4-way direction pad just seems clunky.
At least with the older 4 button controls you knew what button you were pressing.


The new grill will probably come with a 2012 facelift and it likely to mirror the Toureg grill imho.

I haven't seen anything (other than speculation !!) suggesting that the Tig is getting LEDs, rear OR front !!

I guess they will leave that for any facelift...

Just so you know, I have a MY10 Tig and I am pretty sure it has the new climate control. It still has the old steering wheel though.

AFAIK, the lower models in the US don't get the full blown version of this new steering wheel. Only on the 147TSI.
Otherwise, yours is just one of those first batch MY11 147TSI, but unfortunately with all the QC guys on RDO during the changeover.


Anyhow, would've also liked both the smart key keyless entry and push-start/stop ignition button on the Tig.

Having driven Golfs without the steering wheel control, I find the MFD much easier to operate with the pauper-pack alternative - stalk buttons (same as the cruise control but on the RHS stalk). Of course I'd never give up the radio volume control and mute buttons on the steering wheel

There has already been issues on the vortex forum bout the push button start failing on a tiguan and they have only been out for 1 month.
I wouldn't want something that I can't override.

If it was activated and it failed then yes it would be a problem.
If it wouldn't activate then you could always just leave the car in gear.

Unfortunately there wasn't any other option at the time I ordered and VW still do not offer a cable handbrake which i find annoying.
Best to limit the number of things that can't be overridden to the lowest number possible imho.

Yeah I agree mate. I'm paranoid that it'll fail one day when I'm in the middle of nowhere and you won't be able to move the car. Not a big fan of the electric handbrake at all.

Most of their faults seem to be from people spilling liquid onto it as the cup holders are right next to the handbrake.

I do like the funky sound it makes when you activate it but i am always worried that one day it will just fail.

Will be interesting to see how the new DSG box goes when mated to an APR mapped ECU.

Had one for 4 yrs now, no probs. Its on the dash in the Passat though. Manual handbrakes fail too.

While I was patiently waiting for Jan 2011 for our Tig to arrive, I received a call from the dealership yesterday telling me that they have a cancelled order that closely matched what we wanted which can be delivered at the end of Sept. We are going to miss out on our Park Assist , MDI & off Road technology.. we took the offer to avoid another 4-5 months wait. unfortunately the discount is not as good as our original order.

Went to the dealership today to sign the new contract and saw many MY11 models, the steering wheel looks great, additional 4 Motion badge at the rear and of course the DSG gear box. The sales guys said that he has driven a 125 TSi with the DSG , its much better , faster and smoother, and also a lot quieter on TDI .

The car has just left Freementle today and will dock at Port Kembla on 6th Sept. Expect to deliver before end of Sept.

Back to Back drive MY2009 TDI 6 speed auto with 2011 TDI 7 speed DSG
I drove a Colleague's brand new Tiguan home, identical specs to my own meaning I could do a back-back comparison.
My Tiguan has about 20,000km, this one has 60km, so concession has to be given to the tightness of the motor.
First impression is the diesel motor noise is noticably less around idle, and less motor vibration comes through the steering wheel. Makes me think they've done work on some better fluid coupled engine mounts rather than more insulation. I think this was a feature of the Golf 6.
I have driven extensively a 4 year old Golf 5 diesel DSG, and it was unimpressive - harsh start, transmitted vibration and laggy changes. What's impressive about the 7-speed DSG is that its unremarkable. It starts and changes smoothly and changes at the right time just like a well controlled auto should.
This Tiguan 6 speed auto starts in second gear, and changes into 6th gear about 75km, and holds it down to 65km/h (1400rpm)
7 speed DSG starts in first, no rev drop noticable for the Haladex torque split change. Changes into 7th gear at 80km/h, holds it down to 71 km/h. May hold it lower, but on a flat road with no throttle, it maintained 71km/h. Would have to try again on a slight incline to tell for sure.
Under light throttle, my 6-spd auto spends its life in the 1500 to 1900 rpm range. The DSG sits 1100-1500 rpm range, which I think is the key to its better claimed fuel figures. This car was showing 6.5l/100km for the first 60km of its life, I get high 6s in traffic. To my ear the DSG fitted engine sounds as if its *almost* struggling, and changes gear just when it verges on labouring. VW seems to have done some pretty frugal mapping.
Drive the DSG in Sport, on Wide Open Throttle when cruising it picks up its skirts and moves, similar to the 6 spd auto. In D, both drop a gear and rev on WOT, but the DSG seems a little sluggish - I think because it is starting from lower revs in a taller gear than a 6 spd. Or maybe its new and tight.
2011 Interior: The silver highlights on the inside if the door grips have gone, which oddly I miss. Looks a little sombre and plasticky now. The pistol grip auto shifter button is on the front and inconvenient to depress. (I tend to swap into S on my 6 spd auto T-bar to slow down for lights or in anticipation of WOT.)
The white instrumentation is superior to the blue/red, however the MFD now seems cluttered. (I did not option off-road on mine, as the MFD bouncing compass arrow option that comes with this distracted me on my test drive (I did not know then you could turn it off)).
You can turn off options, but they are all turned on by the dealership.Its information overload. Better is tha instead of cryptic symbols it now says "Average Consumption" etc in clear English. Hallelujah!
The cruise control symbol has moved from within the speedo to the MFD, which adds to the clutter, as it only disappears when the cruise is switched fully off. The purpose of doing this is to show the set speed of the cruise control as well, which is not that useful, but impressive gadget-wise. I forgot to check if the digital speedo and the cruise control shows 'true' road speed or the conservative analogue value. If it showed true value, then this would be very useful on freeway right lane work with out having to cross-reference the tomtom.
The Golf 6 steering wheel is better - thicker rim, and more intuitive buttons.
The climate control feels cheaper - less fan steps and 1 degree temperature increments.
