Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Damn stone chips!!

As a bit of a surprise I took the GF for a drive to Batemans Bay for a frolic in the sand and a feed on the water. All was going well until we passed a car that flicked a stone into the window which produced a small chip. "Bugger" said I, but it should be ok as it was only a small pin prick mark to the windscreen. Imagine my surprise to come back after lunch to see the small chip had developed into this:

Now I'm glad we did our homework and got free window coverage with QBE, I dare say a new window is going to be pricey.

It was also annoying to look at it when driving back up the Clyde as it was right in my way when taking the hair pin turns

Ouch! Not good man - sorry to see that.

Tell you what though - I am interested to know whether VW have spare windshields in stock. I doubt there are cheaper aftermarket screens available for the Tig as it's too new (and Euro), so you are at VW's mercy. When my driver side window was smashed they didn't have any here or in the regional Singapore hub, so it had to be special ordered from Germany. I really hope that you don't have this problem. If you do, please kick up as much of a stink as possible because unlike the side window, the windshield is important from a safety perspective and is also more likely to need replacement than a lot of other parts. So if my screen breaks I don't want to wait weeks for a replacement.

I remember reading your thread about the side window and thinking "poor bugger, hope that doesn't happen to us"... I can guarantee you I'll be kicking up a stink if we get messed around like you did. Hopefully the more people who don't accept poor service, the better it will get.

I got mine (on my Passat) replaced through O'Briens who did it all quite quickly, got the rain sensor back on etc perfectly. I'd contact them and not just VW. As far as I can work out its just the same as the VW one.

My brother sold his wife's car the other day and had to get a new screen. He phoned O'Briens and was quoted $427.00. I said that sounded a bit expensive, so he phoned RACQ (QLD), they quoted him $285!!! He phoned O'Bs back and asked them to check their price. They came back with original price($427), he then told what he had been quoted and the girl very calmly said "that's fine sir, would you like us to match that price for you?". He just as politley said "no thank you".

I feel your pain....my wife was driving on the M4 when a metal object flew right into the screen...totally destroyed the screen and the Tig was only 20 days old...
I ended up getting a GENUINE screen from VW and was blown away by the price...only $330 rain sensor screen...my Swift screen cost me $520 Genuine...
All up $330 plus $100 for installation...More then happy with the purchase...

Interesting.. When it happened to me the Genuine VW screen was the same price as the O'Briens and apparently the exact same screen. Next time (hope there is no next time) I'll try the NRMA!
