Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • APR Engine Mount Insert

Hey guys i recently got a 125TSI Tig in Manual (for the wife) although I will be driving it a bit on the weekends and am not happy with the lack of weight in the gear shift or the lack of feel in the clutch.

Has anyone put in one of the Engine mount inserts into a manual Tig, and if so how can you describe the difference?

    Any comments are greatly appreciated.

    Cheers, Delan

IHMO, you'd be wasting your time with the insert to sort that issue . I'm sure VW have spent thousands of hours, time and development costs in developing that clutch. It's sooo smooth in stock form that most people can't believe you are changing gears. The negative with the insert is that it transmits more vibration through the body, gear stick etc. On the + side, it does make the gear changes a little snappier in that it reduces the engine mount flex and unloads the gearlinkages. But with a stock 125, I really doubt you'd notice any difference other than the increased vibration, unless you really hammer it. Of course if you have a remapped Tig, then definitely a good idea.

I have the engine mount in a remapped Tig and i can notice a definite ease of gear changes.
It slots in smoother and allows for quicker changes from my experience.

Guy's I just ordered a BFI Insert (Blackforest Industries) after reading a fair bit about in on a number of other forums and websites. I hope to receive it soon and will install and see how it goes. I'll post back with my findings. If it makes things worse I can always pull it out again.

        Thanks for the advice guys.

I realise the clutch is ultra light, but I guess coming from a string of GTI's and the DSG I am expecting a level of feel which the Tig was never engineered for.

I've installed the insert (probably about 3 weeks ago). It was a pain to install as it was near impossible to get all the way in and the nut in the back of the rubber boot where the mount gets inserted misaligned. Took ages to get the nut in the right position and get the mount in far enough to actlually connect the bolt. This is even using a jack to push the insert in and also using silicone spray. Anyway. The vibrations were awfull!

I left it in for a week and the mount seemed to settle. I got underneath the tig again and found the mount had worked it's way in a little more so I had to re tighten the bolt that holds it in. There was no way I could turn it to the recommnded 74NM. But it is tighter than it was when I took the original bolt off.

As a result of the bolt being so tight I have 'pancaked' the bottom of the insert and the base is now about 1-2mm thick opposed to the 3-4mm it was when I first bought it.

Bottom line, It fits well now, the vibrations ahve minimised, but are noticable only in slow reverse... however the shifts are far more direct and have much more feel. I can actually 'feel' what gear it is in when my hand it on the stick as it has a distinct action to the direction of the shift opposed to a vauge feeling when it was original. It also has a little more resistance, and this is something I prefer.

Now... I'm pretty happy with it... Now it is time to save some money and get it chipped.

Thanks for the advice and feedback.
