  • Rear wiper

I was in that crazy Melbourne storm yesterday, so had the first chance to use the rear wiper. It sucks! Unlike the fronts, it is noisy and only stutters across the window. Is this normal? Does anyone else have a noisy, stuttering rear wiper?

Mine actually leaves 8 evenly spaced smudges as it moves side to side.

I always find it useful to use something like "Rain X" on the front and back. It provides a nice smooth surface for the wipers to run across and we don't get any stuttering.

      Correct.

I know it sounds crazy, but the rear glass and rubber wiper insert need to be spotlessly clean to be fully effective.

      Rainex is great, too.

When I had the rear tailgate trim off, I had a good look at the rear wiper assy. Its a cheap design, rigidly mounted - hence the motor noise. The blade parks horizontally with no glass lift-off, so its never going to work without smearing and immediately ripping up the blade. I would have thought the design would have been taken from the Golf or Passat wagon, so I'm surprised its so poorly executed.

Thanks all. By the way, the wiper is effective at removing the water, but just seems a bit cheap. Very un-Tiguan!!

Yep, I get both the noise and stutter. I generally find the rear wiper only works well when you're on highway driving and you get the fine mist deposits on the rear window rather than just rain drops. Still noisy, but no stuttering when it's the fine mist drops.

I too thought it was very average from VW.
