  • Tiguan 147 Tinting Only - Your Experience, not so much quotes

    Hi All,

I have been through the tinting threads, they are all over the place.

I just wanted to start a thread where people, if they wish, can let us know how they went matching the two front windows to the existing tinting/privacy glass to the rear tailgate window and rear passanger windows that is standard in the Tiguan 147.

The price, product used (if known) and if it was done at the dealer would be really really useful i think for any Tiguan 147 owner (not just me).

Also, is it a good match?

FYI i just got a quote from a the Sydney based dealer selling me the car for a street legal brand metal based tint at $395 which i managed to get down to $355.

I also got a quote off a small local Sydney operator at $80 using a solarguard metal based product.

I will update once decision is made, product installed and a bit of time passed.

    Cheers

I paid $200 for all 5 windows on my GTI, including the difficult hatch window which many tinters refuse to do because it's too curved.

$395 for two flat windows seems excessive.

You may find the tint is too difficult to match (which a friend of mine with a Subi was told) in which case you may end up having to get the entire car tinted. If this is the case just be careful with the metalic tint as some euros have a secondary antenna built into the rear windscreen which is rendered useless by metalic tint. Not 100% sure if the Tig does or not.

My 147 tinting was arranged by the dealer with legal tint (lifetime warranty). Sorry I don't know the firm or the type of tint. I do know it matches perfectly - no appreciable difference between front and back tint. It cost $350.

I thought it was worth the money to get the dealer to organise and complete prior to delivery by a firm that had made the colour match before.

            Hi,

Yeah i started this thread and nailed down a guy who has experience with the Tig but more importantly uses the quality stuff for half the price.

The factory tint wasn't dark enough to merely match the front 2 windows of my black 147.

So i got roughly 30% tint on the back 3 windows (which already have a roughly 30% factory tint in the privacy glass - which is roughly the equivalent to 15-18% tint) and i got 18% on the front 2 windows.

Looks awesome and consistent, i highly recommend going down this path especially for a black 147.

            Cheers

A photo late in the day and at the right angle so the affect is enhanced a bit, but still, looks the goods and its legal.

I thought the limit in NSW is 35%? The 147 already comes with 35% on the back 3 windows. Can you clarify why you say the 18% is legal? If the tint is illegal, there will be implications for your insurance.

Ive also got a half tinted 147; I want to get the front 2 windows tinted, not sure what the best option is so I would also be interested in any suggestions

I've also got a Tig 147 on order with the Dealer doing the tint (no cost to me). I've asked them to do the full "dark" tint but didn't realise that the factory "comfort glass" wasn't as dark as it could be for our requirements? Is that the case?

James, your car looks great, specially the tinted windows.

I got mine done at the VW dealer where I bought the car. Cost me $250 for all windows (not the front of course). I went with 20%, because I had 30% on my previous car and thought it was a tad too dark at night.
I've had the car for 6 months now and I'm pretty happy with the tint. There are no ripples, no bubbles, and no peeling anywhere.

The dealer offered to have our new 147 tinted pre-delivery, but they also wanted to install a clear "heat shield" tint over the already-tinted back windows. Has anybody gone down this road?

To me, it sounds like they're just trying to squeeze more cash out of us.

I had our Tig tinted a few weeks ago and had Ultra Performance 75 put on the rear passanger and back windows. It apparently reduces heat coming in by 40% and 99% UV. Only fitted really to give some added protection for the kids in the back.

I see a black Tiguan that looks exactly like yours every time I drive towards a certain historic bridge. Very very eye-catching.

By the way, did you get your sunroof tinted too?

                            Re. Tinting the sunroof:

Have booked my Tig in for a tint at the local Tint-a-car and asked about the possibility of tinting the sunroof too. I was told doing so risked the glass of the sunroof cracking, which I assumed could be due to extreme temperature differentials or pure heat.

Has anyone else heard about this? Why would the sunroof crack?

With such a massive sunroof it's tempting to apply a tint to it, hopefully to reduce the amount of heat and glare that enters the cabin, especially in summer. I understand the sunroof glass already has a light dye in it, which would help. Can only wait to see how it fairs in the upcoming summer months. Can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit!
