  • Tiguan Diesel Fuel TDI models

After 5 months of proudly owning and enjoying the Tig, driving the TDI using Shell, BP (low grade in Vic) diesel, I decided to fill up using the Vortex Premium Diesel from Caltex. I was pretty empty so took over 50 litres, thereby diluting the Shell diesel in the tank. Wow this Vortex really is lively stuff. Quicker get up and go, less straining in lower gears when not in Sports mode and noticeably more power on accelaration. I will definately go out of my way to use this stuff next tank fill. Noticed a huge price difference across town though, Brunswick was over 28c/l and 21c/l in Clayton. It is about time us Aussies got decent european grade fuel for a fair price.

I love my Coles 4c per litre discount, but when I moved to a diesel tiguan I found that the Shell/Coles stuff does not give as good economy as the Caltex/Safeway stuff. Sometimes I even buy it with no 4c discount (gasp!) just to get the good stuff.
From a technical point of view, there should be no difference, as the fuels all comply to the same standard, and probably come out of the same refinery. I do know that they play around with the volatiles continually between summer and winter, perhaps thats the reason I can see a difference. Might have to try the Vortex Premium stuff to see if I notice a difference

Since I've always had euro cars I always fill premium 98 RON petrol, euro cars just run a heap better on it.

      Slower consumption, more power.

Let's hope you don't put it into your diesel.

        That would learn you.....

Okay I'm talking petrol and the OP is talking diesel but the principal is the same, the difference is barely a few $1 coins.

Oh Yeah, I always forget the Woolworths/Caltex association as I don't pass one of their fuel stations. I must then do a shop at Woolies and try their Diesel out. I am not sure of the Caltex diesel at Woolies outlets but after some angst, I now realise the Shell/Coles express Diesel is obviously a low performer. The Vortex Premium has a cleaning agent in it. Just can't wait for BP to have their Ultimate Diesel avaiable in Victoria.
Shell's website states their Diesel fuel is ultra low 10ppm as well.

Caltex Australia provides high-quality products and services for when you're on the road. From Techron® fuels, lubricants, service stations, and more!

From viewing the Woolies website their Diesel appears to be the standard ultra low sulphur grade (possibly not the cleaning agent added) in the Diesel sold at Safeway/Woolies.
I had a Mazda/Ford V6 prior to Diesel Tig and always used Premium 95 or 98 fuels as I found them to keep everything clean and running well. Sounds like this Vortex will do the job well. From just 100kms travel the Fuel Guage is definately showing better economy. Biggest difference is probably the accelaration around 75-100km/h much more lively and responsive.

BP Ultimate Diesel - that's all for us. Don't care if it's ".00001315236" cents more expensive! We are talking about $50-60K cars that run better and cleaner on premium fuels.

If you have to, get a BP corporate card and save ".00001315235" cents a Litre.

Is the BP diesel the best ?
                  Better than the Woolies/Caltex ?
Getting my Tig within the next week or 2
The price difference doesnt worry me.
You are absolutely right, youre talking about $50 k cars.....

I didn't actually realise Premium Diesel was available in NSW now. I saw it up in QLD and was envious.

Traditionally I am a Shell user, but they don't have Premium Diesel so I've been adding the Moreys Diesel Engine Smoke Killer (per Miro's recommendation) to compensate. Presumably if I use the Vortex Diesel I will not need to do that?

I think I'll be giving it a go next time I fill the tank.

I started using it from day one of it's release OCT08 in my other diesel vehicles. http://www.bpultimatebrochures.com.au/
Yes there are additives out there, but the BP already has them. IMHO I believe it is better. Not starting a fuel war though, as I'm sure there are others than would swear by their preference/s.

After 5 days running on Caltex Vortex Premium Diesel it appears fuel economy may not be that much better but time will tell. All I do know is that it runs smoother, less rattling, hesitation and definately much better to drive overall. Only drawback so far is a broken windscreen. Maybe I planted the foot too much?

Looks like I'll have excess 4c coupons from Coles now so my other half can use on PULP for the FSI 2.0 Golf. When BP gets its act together and brings Ultimate to Melbourne, then I'll try it.
