Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Rear drop down cup holders broken

      Hi,

The plastic cover from the flip down cup holders in the rear centre console of my Tig seems to have dropped off.
I've tried for 15 mins to re-attach it but it's dark and no amount of torch light helps and the plastic is black on black and my fingers are too big !

      Anyone know the knack?

Or does this require a special tool and only the VW dealer has it?!

there was a guide about a year ago with pictures about how to reinstall it. Check if pivot point has broken off, if so then it is $200 at a dealer to fix. (which is the reason the parts from mine are now sitting in the glovebox)

It's a very common problem. Mine is broken too after one of the kids stood on it accidentally. Yes as long as the clips are still intact it can be put back in but it is pretty tricky. No special tools - just need to hold your tongue the right way when putting it back in.

The little buggers also ripped off the cigarette lighter spring loaded cover (above the cup holder), I rescued it from the floor. It just unclips too, and is easy to put back (when the time comes). Don't lose it!

              Thanx for all the replies.
Managed to get it back on, it still seems to work but will now need a visit to a tongue chiropractor!
Apart from that the car seems to be screwed together way better than my old Ford, though I occasionally get a rattle from behind the speedo somewhere. I hope that goes away

                Rear Cupholder damaged

                Hi,
Rear seat passengers trod on the cupholder while open. It is now in three parts.
There is no obvious sign of broken tabs, but not obvious how to re-assemble it.
Has anyone managed to put these things back together? Is there a procedure or do I ask the dealer to do it.

there was a thread on reassembling the cupholders about 3 years ago, including pictures.
It was relatively straightforward once you got your spacial perception going (and know where the pieces are meant to fit) but I found it too tight to get in there to do the required. Dearer quoted $200 to replace, I cursed VW. My pieces live in the glovebox.

I have a 6 and 8 year old and the cup holders have come apart regularly in both Tiguans that I have had. As Sanman says there is a post on how to re assemble them and re insert them back into the console but it does take some time technique and patience to get it back in. You need to be fairly agile as space is limited (move the front seats as far forward as you can) and do it out in the open so you can see the recessed slots for the hinges to slot back into.

Thanks for the prompt response. Not sure there is any point in having them in the glovebox. That glovebox is so small I have to keep throwing out anything that is not absolutely essential.

I will try to find the post.
I have the door and holder sections, but wonder if the third section is removeable, so it can all be assembled in a more convenient spot than re-inserted. Trying to assemble it while sitting on the back seat with a spotlight is not the easiest.

Yes it can be done, you need a T20 Torx screwdriver to remove 2 screws where the cup holders fold into the back of the centre console.
Next is use a flat large screw driver and wedge the rear vents out and downwards. Once this is done, lever the back panel. where the vent and cupholder was mounted upwards from from below the cupholder by the carpet/transmission tunnel.

There will be some plugs for the 12v socket to disconnect assembly is the reversal of the above except the cup holder will need to be open when you put the 2 Torx screws back.

This does come up from time to time. I've found about 4 threads on this topic so I've merged them all and the one DIY guide to fixing the cup holders. Instructions are in the 2nd post so hopefully easier for people to find (though bambazonke's description above is pretty good).

I too have kids and have had the cup holders busted so I have reassembled and these are now "off-limits" as I have taped them closed so that they don't get broken beyond the point where they are able to be repaired/reassembled.

The top-front clip curls around tightly and there does not seem to be a way of attaching it that I can see.
The shaft is inside the cup claw mechanism so almost impossible to see anything while trying to force it together. Also unlike the other attachment points this one is almost a complete 360 degree with the smallest slot. I can get the bottom two connected and the top back but without the top front connected the door will not close.
Has anyone managed to get this attached or does it normally stay attached and only the bottom ones come off?
The image shows the top attaching clamps, you can also see the bottom rear (not connected)
