Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How to retrofit RVC ( reverse camera) in tiguan + Fiscon Basic plus + Kufatec IMA

Hello. This is my guide for retrofitting a RVC (reversing camera) and Fiscon basic plus bluetooth option and Kufatec IMA into a Volkswagen Tiguan. This was initially posted on mytiguan.com and the thread is called "picture of reversing camera - as need to retrofit". This thread also has additional information regarding the various methods and options for retrofitting different type of rvc's.It is in no way exhaustive but contains useful information other than what is described below.

As usual this is only what I have done.Any modifications you do to your own car are entirely at your own risk

.Anyone that finds this helpful feel free to thank me .Any better shortcuts or suggestions are most welcome just add them to this thread.

The most frustrating part is taking off the panels which no one has ever produced a guide for the tiguan so here is my version. A panel removal tool would help but I didnt have one.Dont need one in the end so save yourself $30.

    remove the uppermost trim first

next on the botton of the tailgate

Back to the upper trim you have just removed

Now removed the side trim-only need to do one side,i chose left but either is ok

    removal of licence plate light

    Install new Touareg camera

    Wiring

The guidewire -thin gauge but stiff metal wire for fencing or equivalent

Remember I had to replace the faulty wiring hence the video and power wires are different now

Once you have fed it throught the rubber tube, you must then feed it back down into the roof lining.Doing this in 2 parts is necessary.Feed a second guide wire as shown forwards and up out of the hole, then attach the first guide wire and pull back so fisrt guide wire comes out from under roof lining.

final tidy up - no need to remove panels inside the car unless you are nuts or have OCD.

Removal of rear left boot panel

This step is optional , desirable but entails buying another tool

Only clipped in so be gentle

      Looking inside/behind the panel

        Wiring up Power to Camera.

Running video lead to head unit

The Kufatec IMA is required to gain video input in RNS510

In this photo please note the wires connecting to the can bus.I have unwound them to make attaching them easier. It has taken me 9months to discover that this can cause inconsistency in how stable/reliable the RVC operates. The Can HIgh and the can LOW wires should be wound as closely together as possible to maintain signal integrity. You have been warned

Reconnect all the wiring and enjoy .

This bit is for FISCON BLUETOOTH UNIT that I installed at the same time

I hope everyone has found this helpful. Personally it has been a very enjoyable exercise. It has taken alot of time and research to complete this and is really there for those of us who like to tinker. For any new car buyers reading this,I think I am still undecided on wether I would still pay the additional A$3500 for the rns51- rvc optional package or follow the path that I have taken.Non tinkers pay the $3500. Tinkers save yourself over $1700

For me the balance sheet reads

          ebay rns510 A$1550
          kufatec ima/rvc interface us$180
          ebay toureg camera A$100
DSE (Dck smith) wire taps A$5
          electric tape A$5

Comparing apples with apples though ,the OEM controller cost about$1000 for reversing lines in the camera so ultimately savings in actually only $900.

For me I had a dispute with the ebay seller of the RNS510 and paypal refunded me $1400 so now i have a fully working RNS510 for $150 but thats another story

          OK thats it.

            great guide!
I'm still waiting for my Toureg Camera from Oskar, I think he may have gone bottom up.
Did your Ebay RNS-510 come with Australian maps or did you have to load them up yourself?
How much was the bluetooth kit? Did you buy this locally? Did you have to recode the car using a VAGCom unit?

                Fantastic How To mate!

BTW; I was unable to get my Boost Pressure to work on my Fiscon all the other extras work though...

I used the Fiscon supplied microphone in the OEM position in the overhead console and it works brilliantly. No issues with voice clarity etc. Might be woth a try for you also.
I will give it that complete OEM fit and feel.
Not 100% keen on the placement of your mic though.
                But each to there own.

Still, might be worth a try to move to the overhead console.

He is still active the w6050 thread so definitely in business.Remember to ask for a NTSC camera if using the Kufatec kit otherwise he will send you a PAL camera to Australia.

The bluetooth kit was ordered from Kufatec USA which is also the same as Oem.plus.and yes you have to recode using VCDS.

Nice guide and write up. I also like the mic located in the factory overhead location.

Have you considered upgrading the RNS-510 to the new firmware as you'll get full screen for the reversing screen and transparent menus.

                    More info here:

The fiscon kit should work as I have no issues and it will show the boost pressure.Only trick is there are seven data readings to show but only room for 4 in the DIS ,so using up arrow right hand buttons of MFSW will show you the battery voltage, boost pressure, boost bar and down arrow will display the litres left in the tank and estimated rpm in the bottom 2 position in the DIS.

I really really wanted to install into the OEM position and Fiscon have a guide for this and how to install the microphone correctly by removing the housing and fitting the microphone through a piece of high density foam/rubber which sits into the square recess behind the perforated section in the overhead console.

For other readers the Fiscon kit comes with 3 microphone bases,1 adhesive small flat base which I use, there is also a small clip on to mount to ??upper A pillar and a large clip on to mount to ??sun visor.

Having said that I am very happy with the sound quality from my position and I don't think it is noticable at all.

The bit that I didn't like was running the wire up the A pillar. As is stated in my guide it is important to replace all the attachemnt clips with new clips and especially the main anchor clip which is the uppermost most clip with special release mechanism. Maybe one day I will do this but at present I didn't want to stuff up the airbag operation.Obviously easy enough to do but I will wait until a guide for the tiguan is released....HINT,HINT.

Please post the part number/numbers for the replacement clips if you have these as I and others will want these someday

Thanks everyone for the Kind words of support.

With regards to upgrading the rns510 to 26XX firmware it is important to understand that this is only a Beta release and although alot of people have no problems I think it is 50/50 , with 50 percent having GPS positioning problems , the source of which has not been identified. As I have a ebay unit I definitely will not be upgrading.I guess I could crack open the unit and look at the motherboard to see if the eprom has been soldered onto but way too much hassle in my opinion.
Voice control is nice,SDHC I can live without, don't really see why it is better than DVDRW,does anyone really have more than 18gigs of MP3s??,faster nav -its already super fast , clock display on screen when off - really useless. Not enough to risk bricking my unit for me at least.
If I had a factory installed unit then I would wait until the offical release and get the service department to do it.

Sounds like you've given it a good deal of thought and kind of agree - if it's not broken don't fix it . It was a chance I took and seems ok but can't hurt waiting for a proper release as you say. I don't need most of the extra features either, and mainly listen to apple lossless on the MDI & iPod cable.

Sorry forgot to answer all your questions earlier
                          Fiscon was $700 from USA
With maps I went to the dealer who graciously let me load them. I do not have my own copy but also manually loaded speed cameras as POIS using vcard format via vwlabs website ,in SA there aren't that many so doing it manually was ok.Better way of couse is to use poi inspector to load as pois and burn a new map disc if you have the original map disc . PM me if you want to know how to do it manually

Thanks for that - even better Rob from (EDIT) http://members.optusnet.com.au/auspacks has them (PAL) for about that price and he's local.
Only found that out after I ordered a Toureg camera from Oskar.
