THe off rod tyres would be a great improvement. I am considering
215/70 R16 All terrains on a spare set of rims. Any recommendations.

What i would like is to be able to fit the offroad pack or parts thereof after sales

    Will email my dealer

    Great read

      Hi Arctra, Nice write up.

A lot of the harder trails start off Old Mill /New Road so when its gets rutted its from the trucks running 33" and 35" (or bigger) tyres.

I don't have access to You Tube so forgive me if this is shown in the vids. When you've got the front wheel in the air and the rear barely touching how much acceleration did you give it as traction control needs quite a bit of boot usually before the ABS starts to do its job. Or is the Haldex system just a series of limited slip diffs acting as torque multipliers? ie a wheel in the air has no torque and a multiple of that is still no torque.
Did you have the offroad button on and the ESP off?

      Cheers

OK, just worked it out and my consumption was 8.87L per 100km (11.27km/L). That's actually better than what I've been averaging in the city! CRAZY!

Riiiiiight. That makes sense then. Wish I'd know that before attempting it, but guess that's half the fun of going offroad... negotiating the unexpected.

No, I tried the slow and gentle approach. I thought flooring it might cause damage... especially trying to put all the torque generated at higher revs being pushed through a single wheel.

I dunno what exactly the Haldex is, but you may be onto something there.
I'll be honest I did not disable the ESP. I am struggling to understand the full justification for turning off ESP when in Offroad mode. Maybe next time.

MY experience is that if you don't turnoff ESP , You'll get bogged more easily.
this is my experience with 4WD and RWD. Haven't had the joy of driving a FWD in the mud yet, Will try the caddy when it rains. Basically you have to allows some wheel spin in the mud and loose service conditions otherwise you end up going no where

That's correct PLUS there's a tendency for the ESP to "take over" throttle and ABS control because of the angles and slipping it may detect which are beyond the "road norms" but perfectly OK in an off-road situation. Basically it's a "who's in control here" situation. At low speed, crawling over lumps and bumps and possibly slipping and sliding a bit the LAST thing you need is the car deciding it knows better than you and "taking control". JJJ from SA (in the British Tig forum) had this happen and nearly "lost it" as a result, it also caused him to actually collide with another vehicle when the esp "decided" not to let him stop !!

By the way, the off-road function of the Tiguan is designed to "electronically lock" the diffs if required and so the "two wheels suspended going nowhere" shouldn't be an issue, I suspect given time and sufficient revs the Tig would have pulled out of there. That said the option of pulling back and taking an alternate route is always preferable anyway as it puts far less stress on man and machine.

            Cheers

Yeah, I think this is why I need to go out with a group that knows what they're doing so I can learn this sort of thing. The Offroad Courses I've found on the web are definitely catering for true 4x4's and not soft-roaders like the Tig, so they aren't really an option IMO. While I was on my own without any other support I wasn't willing to push the boundaries too much in case something went wrong.

Appreciate your input and insights though. All worth knowing and keeping in mind for next time.

                  Great looking trip Arctra.

All I need to do now is talk the lovely wife into letting me get the Tig dirty.

                  Wish me luck!

I think you and I got our Tigs for VERY different reasons. Your Tig looks beautiful with it's 19" wheels and all, and I'm not sure if you've dropped it yet or not, but that's not for me. I specifically wnated to be able to take mine off the tar and get it dirty and for that reason am on the fence about even moving up to 17" rims, and if anything I'd like to raise it a bit rather than slam it. Each to their own I guess

I do wish you luck coz I'm keen to do a bit of a group off-road drive with Tigs. There are a couple of tracks your end of the world. The Tianjara Fire Trail (Nowra to Milton via Tianjara Falls) is rated an Easy, softroader friendly track... *hint* *hint*

Just don't stray on to the tracks on other side of the road, the bog holes in the Yarramunmun are flippin deep in places (like a metre deep) and the Monkey Gum Fire Trail is strictly proper 4WD low range high clearance territory.

But its a great and interesting area and Milton is a top spot for grub and coffee

Other places you might like are the road in the Blue Mountains from the ZigZag railway out to the Glowworm Tunnel and the Lost city, and also the road from Mittagong to the Wombeyan Caves.
Both interesting, picturesque drives to interesting places

                      Cheers

yep, and that's what's so great about these little buggers. They're such a capable, versatile vehicle.
