Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Help with RCD/RNS 510 MDI

    Hey Guys,

I recently got my Tig, unfortunately when I ordered the car the MDI was not a factory fitted option therefore my dealer had to fit it. This was the first MDI they have fitted to a Tig and I'm not happy with the way they fitted it.

Can anyone tell me if this is the normal way to install the MDI system? I was under the impression it was supposed to be installed in some kind of caddy in the centre console?

At the mo I can barely open and close the glove box properly as the cable is jamming the doors hinge. I am taking the car back to have them redo the installation but I wanted to know the right way of fitting it.

Also I can see the song/artist of the current track on the MFD and I can skip tracks but I can't see or access anything else on the ipod. Should I be able to fully control the ipod via the multi function steering wheel (eg. select a playlist or album etc).

The MDI incl installation cost me AU$558 so it wasn't cheap, my installation seems aftermarket rather than genuine!

Please help, pictures of your MDI installation would be greatly appreciated!

I posted this question on Vortex, but am posting here too to see if any Aussies have an MDI yet??

BRH, They come as a "kit" & its up to the tech's installing to work out mounting points etc.

Granted it could have been executed a little better (routing of the cable).

The one that fits in the centre console actually requires a full centre console change, so it not really a retrofit option. We are in East Brisbane & have MDI's retrofitted to both our GTI & Skoda Octavia RS - so swing by & have a look!

      Thanks for the advice Guy_H!

      Can anyone please confirm this...

I have full ipod control on the radio's touch screen (which is cool), but can only skip songs, mute, vol up/down on the steering wheel and MFD...should I be able to control my ipod using the steering wheel and MFD. I want to make sure the dealer had setup everything correctly before I take it back?

          Hi BRH,

Apart from being able to skip files, can you see all your folders and files and browse as well?

Pretty sure the Ipod control does not extend to the steering wheel controls.

Thanks for your feedback everyone, seems everything is as it should be. Slightly disappointed as I was hoping for a bit more functionality in the MFD, but no biggy.

I had my MDI dealer installed by Sth Yarra VW in Melbourne ans they did a better job. They had the cable coming out of the small rectangular plastic plate in the glove box. Take it back and get them to reroute it. My cable can be fed back into the dash so as there is not too much excess cable in the glove box. If required I will post a photo.

                    Hey guys

For those of you with the MDI... how are you finding the volume / sound quality. For now I'm just using the AUX IN option as I wanted my Tiguan quickly. I've noticed that the volume levels are really low (as I'm using the headphone jack rather than the main port. The three levels of input on my head unit (Level 1 - 3) do make a big difference as pointed out to me by the salesman.. but was curious if the same observations are noted via MDI.

I do recall this for speakers and iPods as well - lower sound via headphone jack - higher from the main port.

If you're using the headphone jack of your iPod, then all your normal iPod settings will affect how it sounds. So just turn up the volume on your iPod. Don't forget also that the equalizer settings etc that you have set on your iPod, will also affect the sound quality in the same way.

                        Hi all,

Yesterday I had an MDI and the RNS510 installed on my Tiguan.
One of the first things I did was open the glove box (as I remembered this thread) to see where and how they installed the MDI.

I was happy to see a job like the second set of photos in here.
They used that rectangular plastic thingie in mine as well. Quite a neat job.
Only drama was last night my iPod touch battery was flat, and my iPhone 3G S wouldn't play?! It came up with an error????

Have charged my iPod touch now though, so will have a play around today.
Am hoping to buy a new iPod this week - when they announce new models... and get the biggest iPod classic so I have my entire music collection in my car and accessible via the headunit (RNS510 did I say that yet?!?!)
