Just purchased a 2012 132TSI Pacific!

Hello!

We just got a 2012 132TSI Pacific 4Motion and are waiting to pick it up in a few days.

The price was under 10K, with above average mileage of 167K.

Drove the car for a few minutes 3 times and no issues, drove fantastic and no error lights or sounds.

I have now found out it does not have the DSG, which is probably a good thing.

What are some things to look out for with the Tiguans of this age?

My wife does very little mileage so the high KM's should not keep increasing as they did for its first 8 years.

Surprised it has the advanced SATNAV with parking assist and reverse camera with optical guidance!

I'd be checking that it has the updated timing chain and/or has had it replaced at ~100,000km. If it hasn't been done I'd budget to do it.

Other thing I'd look to get done is a carbon clean of the inlet valves. If it hasn't been done you'll probably have a significant degradation in performance and if let go too long will end up with misfiring/limp mode in worst case.

I was wondering about the timing belt but not sure how one could check if it's the updates one or has been changed at 100k?

Might give barloworld VW a call too as they sold the car new and it's always been serviced there.

The TSI engine in your Tig has no timing belt, it has the chain driven camshafts and therefore it should last the life of the engine. Though, instead it’s a very weak link in the TSI engines like yours.

Get it inspected and replaced if need it, otherwise you might need to spend around $5,000 on repairs or on fitting a secondhand engine.

Called the dealer who has serviced it from day one and up until the last service.

They said the timing chain has never been done (167K on the clock) and the service manager said that its not something that is in the schedule.
I told him about what you guys said and he said that it's not a problem and does not need to be done, even with the high mileage.

So he wasnt really keen on doing it, he said it was going to be a couple of grand to do the timing chain.

Can you guys advise on rough price to pay at dealership or other? I'm in VIC so any recommendations on workshop who does these would be appreciated.

At least make sure you have the latest revisions of the timing chain tensioner. To check and replace it is close $1000 but still better than kill the engine. Any VW mechanic should be able to do the job.

I'm taking your advice on hand, after having a 118TSI Jetta with blown engine and blown 7-speed DSG, I know what it's like.

I will get a quote from VW to check "timing chain tensioner" and the carbon buildup too. If it's around 1K to do then its worth it I know.

I would also get a price from an independent specialist VW/Audi workshop. There’s plenty of these around Melbourne who would be very familiar with this issue and able to assist.

It sounds like the VW dealers have their heads in the clouds around this issue and don’t want to admit there’s a problem with these engines.

Had it checked Volks repair in Essendon and they said all good after road test.

Will get it serviced and properly checked soon.

We like the car a lot, very sporty drive yet still comfortable.

The car has an annoying vibration when cruising and gently touching the accelerator.

It only does it at around 30 to 60kph and when its in high gear and RPM is about 900 to 1200 give or take.

I've since found a thread about it on the USA/Canada clubs which says its normal and common to all the 6 speed automatics. They fixed it over there with a software patch which keeps the RPM's higher to stop this happening.

Whats the status here? Anyone have any experience with this issue?

I wouldn't let a dealer near it. Their lack of enthusiasm and pulling a price out of thin air should be a warning.

So I've had the chain and tensioner replaced.

The car build date is Nov 2011, engine is 06.11.11.

The old tensioner part number was 06K 109 467 IT MR7, which appears to be the latest revision?

I wonder if the previous owners had replaced it, no history of this by VW (serviced by only one VW dealer since new)

Is there any known way to check if a Tiguan has the updated tensioner? I know VW replaced the faulty tensioners after 2012, but I just bought a Pacific MY13, which was released in 2012 and was wondering if it was still an issue. Is there an engine build date or anything that might indicate the update?
