I picked up a 17" Tulsa wheel and tyre today (Comfortline spec) and going to use this as a full-size spare. I've been tossing up what to to and I think this is the best compromise as it'll still almost fit under the boot floor. The other more expensive alternative was to go for the Kapstadt accessory rim from VW and put a matching 235/45R20 tyre on it but then the boot floor would not have fitted.

I think given that I may never need to use the spare this is a reasonable compromise. At least now when I'm travelling in the country I'll have a full-size spare rather than a dodgy space saver.

Wheel installed in the wheel well. Boot floor sits marginally higher at the top setting.

I may look at modifying the boot floor when I have a bit more time to get a more flush fit.

Hey Dam, do you have a photo of how it sits? I'm particuarly interested too as I will be doing some interstate driving around with the wife unit.. also need to see if I can fit my spare tyre subwoofer too (can't live without bass lol).

I'm more interested in how it sits in the cavity, i.e. without the false floor

Ahhh. Well looks just like a spare wheel in the wheel well. Not much different to the space saver apart from being a bit taller. I’ll get some pics later today and post them up for you.

Ok took some shots of the tyre well with full size 17” Tulsa wheel installed.

One of the limiting factors of fitting the floor with full-size wheel is the handle on the floor which protrudes into the subfloor area:

So I decided to try removing the back off the handle to get a little more clearance:

                  Only busted one clip [emoji21]

In case anyone is trying this here’s what the clips look like:

Boot floor sits marginally lower now:

                    Thanks for that!
Looks like if I did the same with a narrower tyre it might just work out and there's enough space for the sub too.
I need the floor flat and in place as the wife uses the car to deliver cakes she makes on the weekend too.

The tyre on the 17x7 Tulsa is a 215/65R17 so is already pretty narrow. This is the reason I didn't go with a "matching" 20" Kapstadt or even a stock 18' rim as they both run a 235 width tyre and would push the boot floor higher. With the modified handle it almost sits flush on top of the spare wheel.

I think if you pulled the handle completely off you'd get the boot floor sitting on the spare wheel and not have a "high spot" at all. Though now with the back of the handle off it's barely noticeable.

As it sits, it’s a pretty good compromise. I’ll probably do same and just carry it for road trips... around town (99% of my trips) a space saver will do.
It’s a shame VW didn’t leave enough room for a Suzuka option even if they only supplied a space saver. That’s a missed opportunity for dealers to up-sell to a 5 wheel set.

Yeah I'm happy with how the boot floor sits - it's on the high setting and only just sits a fraction higher at the boot lip than it "should" on the higher setting. You can still use the space underneath you just have to raise the floor to get to it.

The problem you have with Suzukas is they are 20x8.5 running 255/40 R20 so you these are 40mm wider than the 215's which barely fit (at a squeeze). I agree a deeper wheel well to be able to fit a standard size wheel would be nice. It's probably not even an issue in places like Europe where distance to the next town is a bit of non-issue.

I'm running the full-size spare wheel permanently as I really couldn't be bothered taking it in/out each time I go for a country trip.

                            Full size spare wheel.

Had our Tig for 4 months now & the local dealer emphatically states that a full size spare will not fit in the appropriate space in the rear.

I also recall seeing a response - I think here - where a modification was made to slightly raise the height of the rear to accommodate the 'real' spare... but now I can't find it.

Will be doing some touring starting in June so would like to fix this issue if possible.

Anyone point me in the right direction, please...

Yes I’ve done it. Fitted a stock Tiguan 17” wheel with 215/65R17 tyre and it almost sits flush at the higher boot setting.

Tigger, I’m guessing it’s not possible to have an actual full-size spare for most of the tig models then (width issue?)

Allspace, I’m guessing is a flat out ‘no’ due to the 3rd row seats.
