Tiguan Features - New Stuff to Discover

I've had my new Tiguan for just over a week now and it's awesome.

I havent read the manual yet so there are new things that I'm discovering over time.

I just found out we have a 11GB HDD that we can put music on and play via the Jukebox function. Does anyone know if it is FLAC compatible?

Anyway, would it be worthwhile starting a list of cool features that we might not know about?

Here are a few I have to investigate:

1. How to turn on the cooler in the glove box?
2. What is the thing in the glove box on the top left with a lever?
3. The best and easiest way to bring up the Sat Nav (be it in-built, iMaps or Google Maps) via voice dictation and to start the navigation to the voice dictated destination. I want it to use my contacts but no luck so far (I know it is possible)...

Yes, the HDD reads FLAC files as does the USB and I have gladly ditched all my MP3's.

#2. See #1. The glovebox cooler (on the Jetta at least) is a vent connected to the aircon...

..and if you are transferring into the harddrive via SD card, make sure the media head unit is switched on first before slotting in the SD card as only then it will refresh (and make visible) any new tracks you have loaded onto the card.

I made the mistake of slotting the SD card in before turning accessories on and I was really confused why I cannot see the new loaded files on the SD card.

The way I use it is a bit different to most. I am into audio books and I load those onto the HDD, it is too small for anything else anyway so that is a good use for it. My music is on a 64 gig USB stick and when anyone else is in the car I put that on as they don't want to listen to books. By doing that I can return to the book and I haven't lost my place which is very nice. God and VW are the only ones who know why they put a stupidly small SSD in the car which they would have had to get specially made, totally dopey if you ask me. In my Skoda the 32G HDD was replaced by a 126G but I don't think I can do that this time around or at least I will wait for someone else to give it a go. In the Skoda I did it the other way round, I put the books on the SD card and the music on the HDD.

1. I wonder if the SSD if changeable to a larger one?
2. I didnt realise there was a USB attachment for the audio? Is this in the glove box or underneath the 8" screen?
3. Anyone have any more ideas on how to voice dictate to your Sat Nav or do most people enter it manually?

The USB is in the console under the centre screen and next to the 12 volt outlet. I have asked about installing a bigger drive and no one wants to go near that so far!

how convenient do u find the USB location? .. plus the fact that usb is not reversible as well didn't help

It is a stupid location and hard to get a drive into because when inserting it you can't see anything and it must be done by feel. I despair of car designers sometimes, they just don't get it where stuff like this is concerned. What makes it less of a problem is that once the drive is in it is not removed very often.

It is a silly location but I suspect that the designers didnt care because I suspect they intended this USB slot to be for Car Play / Android Auto.

The two SD slots in the glove box would be better for removable media since it is easier to access and is hidden. I hate seeing USB stick sticking out from random places.

Also, I suspect that removable media is old school. It's all about streaming music now. Hence the Spotify and Pandora compatibility via the USB slot at the front.

I am not interested in streaming media from the net as a lot of my driving is in areas that cell phones don't operate in and my phone is not used to access data at all. Another thing that bugs me about that dark hole is there should be an LED in there to illuminate it.

I saw the MP3 article but I am not sure what it means, does it mean that MP3 technology has become free for all to use and develop as they want, maybe a bit like open source software? The only reason I had MP3's at all was because the Skoda required it, at home I use FLAC over a SONOS system and I had all my music in both forms for both.

Probably is already a well known feature in more expensive cars but this is the first time for me.

Tiguan Features - New Stuff to Discover

I'm pretty sure the Australian Tiguan has this capability.

Supposedly the wireless charging area is the recess where the USB port is. It's a bit superfluous though. If you had your phone in there then you probably would have it connected to the USB to take advantage of CarPlay/Android Auto so it would charge through the cable anyway.

Haven't been able to confirm as iPhones don't have QI charging.

Obviously you need a smart phone that has wireless charging capability (so Samsung and maybe the upcoming iPhone 10th anniversary), but yes for the Carplay/Android you need the cable which is annoying, but when my car finally arrives I will be looking for one of those retractable USB cables so it can be permanently plugged in but stll make access to plug in fairly easy.

As to the SSD upgrade discussion, I'm in I.T. so I can guess that it should be feasible, but the issues will be getting inside the head unit to replace it which might be easy, or not....then the new SSD will need the same formatting as used by the current SSD. The real issue though could be that the SSD also stores the operating system for the unit, and if so it will need cloning to the new SSD.

So short version, SSD upgrade is probably possible but until my car arrives in October I cant say more. The biggest concern is if it goes wrong VW are likely to leave you out in the cold, and I imagine it would certainly void the the warranty of at least the head unit.
